Doc.shall be designated hj the superintendent or foreman to be at theirproper places from the time that persons begin to descend, until allthe bottom of said shaft or slope whenthe persons who maj be atquitting work shall be hoisted. Such headman and footman shallpersonally' attend tothe signals and see that the provisions of thisact, in respect to lowering and hoisting persons in shafts or slopes,shall be complied with.Rule 41. No person, except the man giving the signal, shall jumpon a car, cage or gunboat after the signal to start has been given,and if any person should enter a car, cage or gunboat in excess ofthe lawful number the headman or footman shall notify him of thefact and request him to get off, which request must be immediatelycomplied with. Any violation of this rule must be reported promptlyto the mine foreman.Kule 42.An empty trip shall be hoisted in any shaft or slope wherethe engine has been standing idle for an hour or more, before menare hoisted or lowered in said shafts or slopes, and no person or personsshall ascend any shaft or slope when working on the night turn,until one trip shall first be hoisted therein.Kule 43. Every passage-way used by persons in any mines andalso used for transi)ortation of coal or other material, shall be madeof sufficient width to permit persons to pass moving cars withsafety, but if found impracticable to make any passage-way of sufficientwidth, then holes of ample dimensions, and not more than onehundred and fifty (150) feet apart, shall be made on one side of saidpassage-way. The said passage-way and safety holes shall be keptfree from obstructions and shall be well drained; the roof and sidesof the same shall be made secure.Kule 44. When locomotives are used in any mine their speed shallnot exceed six (6) miles per hour, and an efficient alarm shall be providedand attached to the front end of every train of cars pushed bya locomotive in any mine or part of a mine.Kule 45. Locomotives propelled by steam, if using fire, shall not beused in any passage-way which is also used as an intake air-way toany mine or part of a mine where persons are employed, unless therebe a suffiecient quantity of air circulating therein to maintain ahealthy atmosphere.Kule 46. No person shall couple or.uncou])le loaded or empty carswhile the same are in motion: Provided however, That this shall notapply to the top or bottom mcni of slopes, planes or shafts.Kule 47. When cars arc run on gravity roads by breaks or sprags,the runner shall only ride on the rear end of the last car, and whensaid cars are run by sprags, a space of not less than two (2) feet fromthe body of the car shall be made on one or both sides of the tracVwherever it may be necessary for the runner to pass along tVe 'S\^r
