It contains the usual tables and a brief description of someof the improA'ements in and about the collieries. The number offatal accidents was 85, leaving 39 wives widows and 104 childrenorphans. The number of fatal accidents this year was 22 more thanlast year. The increase was caused by the Exeter shaft, Midvaleslope, and the Hallstead accidents, whereby 19 lives were lost, abrief account of which will be found in this report.The total quantity of coal mined was 5,904,467 tons, an increase of88,644 tons over 1897.The average time worked was 144 days.Very respectfully,H.
