The tunnel will also be the means of trans-1 oitation for the proposed No. 6 and No. 7 strippings.The Fifth lift tunnel was extended southward 367 feet to the Diamondvein, which was cut in the trough of the basin.On the Fourth lift a tunnel W4is driven southward 203 feet fromthe \\'liarton into the old Mammoth workings, which will be reopenedand worked therefrom*On the Third and Fifth lifts, tunnels are being driven from the\\ harton to the Buck Mountain;Second outlet shafts were completed on both north and south dipson the Diamond vein.We note the attention given to the retimberlng of main turnoutfeen Seventh and Filth lifts and Seventh lift pump room. Stonebatteries inOutside.air courses and maintenance of pump houses.The old No. 6 breaker was torn down, as were also theold boiler house, carpenter and blacksmith shop and the old enginehouse and buildings at the No. 7 slope. The buildings were old andof little value, and were removed to prevent the possibility of a fireand its communication to the mine workings.Proper care has been given to the fencing of mine holes and strippings.Hazleton No. 2 Colliery.The breaker, old cylinder boiler house,stable and smaller buildings were razed and removed from the property,leaving intact only the Porcupine boiler house and slope hoistingengine house.On January 19 fire was discovered in the Stockton No. 8 culmb?nk, close to the dividing line between the Lehigh Valley Coal Companyand East Sugar Loaf Coal Company properties.Prompt measures were taken by both companies to confine thefire within a limited area, wliere it might burn itself out withoutfurther damage to either properties.To accomplish this on the east the Stockton No. 8 breaker and surroundingbuildings which were of no value were either burned ortorn down and removed from the property. The No. 8 slope wasfilled with clay and an open cut made through the dirt bank throughwhich a stream of water was turned. On the west the heading connectingHazleton No. 2 with Stockton workings was walled andpuddled with clay, as was also the east gangway, first lift, and anopen breast to the sniface filled with clay to a point above this heading.The water in the old workings in the East Sugar Loaf Colliery lu-eventedthe downward spread of the fire, which seems to be exhaustingitself within the prescribed limits.The cause or origin of this fire is fropi the inside, and in all prob-
