Latta, Secretary of Internal Affairs:Sir: I have the honor to submit herewith my annual report as Inspeetor of Mines of the Ninth Bituminous District for the year endingDecember 31, <strong>1898</strong>.I have to report that this has been a very prosperous year at themines; the quantity of coal mined was 6,625,788 tons, or 1,5.51,853 tonsmore than was mined in 1897. The (luantity of coke was 2,528,177, oran increase of 934,8.52 tons as compared with 1897. The number ofpersons employed during the year was 8,152, or 357 less than in 1897.I have also to report that 28 fatal accidents occurred during theyear, while there were only 19 the previous year, but a lesser numberof non-fatalities compared with 1897, there' being 7 less.A brief description of these accidents is given, and how they occurred,which will explain where the fault lay. There were 11 wivesmade widows and 24 children made orphans by these casualties.
