No. 11. FIFTH BITUMINOUS DISTRICT. 399eciually satis-cised in the future as in the past by tlie mine officials, factory results will be obtained. Mining boss, James S. Connor.^A'ashington Nos. 1, 2 and 3.—These mines are all in excellent conditionin every respect. Nothing is left undone to secure safety toperson or property. At No. 3 mine a new steel tipple has been erected that for completenessand efficiency will rank with any in the State. Large engineshave been put in place to haul coal out of the new slope. Thedevelopments in the mine have been rapidly and extensively pushedconsequently, a large number of working places are ready, fromwhich, when all the improvements contemplated are completed, alarge output of coal will be produced. It is expected that from3,000 to 3,C()0 tons of coal i)er day can be handled at this mine. Theventilation will be produced by a Capell fan fifteen feet diameter andtwelve feet face, double inlet. It is expected that this will producea greater volume of air than was ever circulated in any mine on thiscontinent, if not in the world. The conditions are certainly all favorablefor such a result. The airways are numerous and being of largearea will offer comparatively small resistance, so that a large volumeof air can be circulated with a very small water guage. Mining bosses,George Santimeyer and John Bell.Walker.—The condition of this mine has been very much improvedsince my last report. It has passed into other hands and great improvementshave been made in the ventilation and other conditions. In connection with the Statler mine, an electric plant furnishes powerto operate mining machines of the Jeffrey type.Owing to the prolongedstrike due to the re-adjustment of mining rates, the efficiencycf these machines to mine coal successfully has not yet beendemonstrated. There are peculiar conditions connected with thisparticular coal seam that may militate against machine mining bythe type now being used. The results will be watched with interestby the producers of coal in the neighborhood of these mines. Miningboss, Archie Cochrane.Yoder.—Idle all year.Youngstown.—This mine is in good condition. The ventilation, drainage and general conditions are good. The mine is in good handsand well taken care of, and will not suffer for lack of attention. Miningboss, John Gibson.37
