518SPEECH AT A MEETING OF THE LAND COMMITTEECONGRESS AND THE PEASANT SECTIONOF THE THIRD CONGRESS OF SOVIETSJANUARY 28 (FEBRUARY 10), 1918 180NEWSPAPER REPORTWe are now engaged in the great task of consolidatingthe gains of the working masses, the great task of unitingthe workers, soldiers and peasants. At the Peasant Congresswhere the Rights had a majority I said that if the peasantsrecognised all our demands we in turn would support all thepeasant demands, the chief of which is socialisation of land.*We have now done this. We have passed the world’s firstlaw abolishing all private ownership of land. We now havepower, the power of the Soviets. This power, brought to thefore by the people themselves, lays a sound foundation forthe great cause of world peace. The war has been stopped,and demobilisation has been ordered on every front. Thereis still the war against the bourgeoisie which is mobilisingall its forces to fight Soviet power. We have almost put anend to the Russian counter-revolution. We are gaining theupper hand in almost every battle fought on all the fronts.There is still another enemy; it is international capital;the fight against this enemy will be a long one and we shallwin by getting organised and obtaining support for ourrevolution from the international proletariat. We are stillfaced with a big fight, the class struggle at home. This isan economic struggle against the bourgeoisie, who, directlyor indirectly, support our enemies and who will try toestablish economic domination over the working masses.One thing that we suffer from, that makes our countryweak, is the lack of money.
