EVALUATION OF THE EUROPEAN STRATEGY ON SAFETY AND HEALTH AT WORK 2007-2012165There is a c<strong>on</strong>tinuing need for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> integr<strong>at</strong>i<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> occup<strong>at</strong>i<strong>on</strong>al <strong>health</strong> into <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> wider<strong>health</strong> sphere, encouraging awareness <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> potential benefits to both employees<strong>and</strong> employers <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>health</strong>y lifestyle choices.6.2.6 Rehabilit<strong>at</strong>i<strong>on</strong> <strong>and</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> accommod<strong>at</strong>i<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> age-rel<strong>at</strong>edchangeMusculoskeletal disorders are likely to remain a significant issue am<strong>on</strong>gst <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> EU-27 <strong>work</strong>force. However, as well as <strong>on</strong>going efforts aimed <strong>at</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> preventi<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>injury, <strong>at</strong>tenti<strong>on</strong> should also be paid to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> better rehabilit<strong>at</strong>i<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> those wi<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>xisting or degener<strong>at</strong>ive disorders where efforts will be needed to enable <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>m toremain in productive <strong>work</strong>. There is clear evidence th<strong>at</strong> some musculoskeletaldisorders are part <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> inevitable process <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> age-rel<strong>at</strong>ed degener<strong>at</strong>ive change.6.2.7 Revisi<strong>on</strong>s to existing challengesAs st<strong>at</strong>ed above (6.2.2) it is anticip<strong>at</strong>ed th<strong>at</strong> some <strong>health</strong> problems <strong>and</strong> risks <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>current major c<strong>on</strong>cern (e.g. musculoskeletal disorders <strong>and</strong> <strong>work</strong>place stress) willc<strong>on</strong>tinue to be significant c<strong>on</strong>cerns for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> immedi<strong>at</strong>e future. As well as <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>influence <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> demographic change, <strong>on</strong>e c<strong>on</strong>tributory element to this is likely to bechanges in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> n<strong>at</strong>ure <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> some types <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>work</strong> leading to an increased risk potential.Specifically, advances in ICT <strong>and</strong> pressures to reduce <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> emissi<strong>on</strong>s <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> greenhousegases associ<strong>at</strong>ed with travel will see a growing reliance <strong>on</strong> home<strong>work</strong>ing. As aresult, unless adequ<strong>at</strong>e c<strong>on</strong>trol measures are introduced, employers will have lessc<strong>on</strong>trol over <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>work</strong>places <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> those using computers for <strong>work</strong>, with a c<strong>on</strong>sequentincreased risk <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> MSDs. In additi<strong>on</strong>, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>re is a risk th<strong>at</strong> home<strong>work</strong>ing will tend toincrease <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> isol<strong>at</strong>i<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>work</strong>ers 191 , removing traditi<strong>on</strong>al avenues <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> social supportfrom peers etc.Again, without suitable c<strong>on</strong>trols, some risk factors for <strong>work</strong>place stress couldincrease with a c<strong>on</strong>comitant disturbance <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>work</strong>-life balance, although <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>evidence seems to be mixed, some suggesting a positive outcome from such <strong>work</strong>with o<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r researchers suggesting more adverse effects 192 193 194 .
