A fair balance shouldbe stricken between research <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> emergence <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> new risks (e.g. Green <strong>and</strong>Blue Ec<strong>on</strong>omy) <strong>and</strong> research <strong>on</strong> preventi<strong>on</strong> from more traditi<strong>on</strong>al but morecomm<strong>on</strong> risks. This places extra strain <strong>on</strong> occup<strong>at</strong>i<strong>on</strong>al <strong>health</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>safety</strong> which isseen by many as an expense to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> business ra<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r than adding value. Initi<strong>at</strong>ives toillustr<strong>at</strong>e <strong>and</strong> promote <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> financial benefits <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> good <strong>health</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>safety</strong> willpotentially <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>refore be <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> c<strong>on</strong>siderable value.Although <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>re is evidence for a downward trend in accidents <strong>at</strong> <strong>work</strong> across <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>majority <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> MS <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>re are no grounds for complacency. Again, many <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> risksare known <strong>and</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> de<strong>at</strong>hs <strong>and</strong> serious injuries arising from accidents <strong>at</strong> <strong>work</strong> arepreventable in many instances, given suitable acti<strong>on</strong>.In additi<strong>on</strong> to financial pressures, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> ec<strong>on</strong>omic situ<strong>at</strong>i<strong>on</strong> will result in increasingpsychosocial pressures including high dem<strong>and</strong>s <strong>at</strong> <strong>work</strong>, <strong>and</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> disrupti<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><strong>work</strong>-life balance. These changes are likely to result in an increase in stress-rel<strong>at</strong>edillness or poor mental well-being. Attenti<strong>on</strong> to psychosocial risks in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>work</strong>placewill <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>refore be <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> c<strong>on</strong>tinuing <strong>and</strong> growing importance.Current <strong>on</strong>going major <strong>health</strong> c<strong>on</strong>cerns such as MSDs <strong>and</strong> stress are likely toc<strong>on</strong>tinue for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> foreseeable dur<strong>at</strong>i<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> any new <str<strong>on</strong>g>str<strong>at</strong>egy</str<strong>on</strong>g>. Both are m<strong>at</strong>ters <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>some deb<strong>at</strong>e, in th<strong>at</strong> both can be rel<strong>at</strong>ed more to n<strong>on</strong>-<strong>work</strong> than <strong>work</strong>-rel<strong>at</strong>edfactors. Deb<strong>at</strong>e c<strong>on</strong>tinues as to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> extent to which ei<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r can be defined asoccup<strong>at</strong>i<strong>on</strong>al diseases.
