Runoff Reduction Control Measure Fact SheetGreen RoofStep 7 – Determine Irrigation NeedsDetermine irrigation needs based on the vegetation selected; at a minimum, temporary irrigation isrecommended during the first two years of plant establishment. Potable water may be used in a permanentirrigation system, but consider using recycled, non-potable water, such as air conditioning condensate.Analyze any alternative water source to make sure it doesn’t contain compounds harmful to the plants.Step 8 – Incorporate Fire BreaksA Berlin study found that green roofs are more fire resistant than gravel roofs. The City of Portland’s FireBureau recently converted a fire station conventional roof to a green roof. Green roofs may help slow thespread of fire to and from the building through the roof, particularly when the growth medium issaturated. Succulents such as Sedum offer good fire resistance due to their high water content. However,if the plants themselves are dry, they may present a fire hazard. The integration of vegetation-free "firebreaks" at regular intervals across the roof, at the roof perimeter, and around all roof protrusions isrecommended. These breaks should be made of a non-combustible material such as crushed gravel, pebbles, or concrete pavers; be 12 to 36 inches wide; and be situated every 130 feet in all directions.Another option for fire prevention is a sprinkler irrigation system connected to the fire alarm. (Köhler2004; Peck and Kuhn; Velazquez 2005)Construction ConsiderationsConsider hiring an environmental/green roof specialist to oversee the construction process.• Throughout the construction process, protect green roof components, particularly the vegetation, until established.• Prevent erosion by covering the growth media with mulch, jute/cellulose netting, or otherapproved protection methods prior to seeding or planting.• Require consultants and installers to follow appropriate safety measures for working onindustrial/commercial rooftops.Long-Term MaintenanceThe local permitting agencies in the Sacramento and South Placer areas require execution of amaintenance agreement or permit with the property owner prior to final acceptance of a privatedevelopment project that includes a green roof. Such agreements or permits will typically includerequirements such as those outlined in Table GR-2. The property owner or his/her designee is responsiblefor compliance.Stormwater Quality Design Manual for the Sacramento and South Placer RegionsMay 2007GR-7
