Runoff Reduction Control Measure Fact SheetAlternative Driveway DesignDescriptionAlternative driveways are designed to reduce thevolume and rate of runoff and increase localizedinfiltration. These driveways exhibit one or moreof these features: they have permeable surfaces, drain to landscaping, provide access to more thanone house, and/or limit concrete use to narrowdriving strips. It is recommended that you read the PorousPavement and Disconnected Pavement factsheets before using this one, since this techniqueemploys principles from those.Siting Considerations• Land use: Single-family residential development and redevelopment.• Driveway slope: 10% maximum.• Soils: Appropriate for all soil types but porous pavement requires an underdrain for soil types Cand D.Vector Considerations• Potential for mosquitoes in vegetated features of alternative driveways due to standing water willbe greatly reduced or eliminated if the driveway is properly designed, constructed, and operatedto maintain its infiltration capacity.Advantages• Replaces regular pavement, so does not require additional land on the site.• Can reduce size of downstream stormwater quality treatment measures by reducing the volumerequired to treat.• Sometimes more attractive than traditional pavement.Limitations• If driveway includes a public right-of-way or utility easement, contact local permitting agency todetermine if alternative driveway design is acceptable and if so, any special requirements.• See Siting Considerations.Maintenance Recommendations (None to Low 1 )• Driveways with disconnected pavement require no additional maintenance over traditionaldriveways, but accumulations of sediment adjacent to driveway need to be removed periodicallyto keep surface water flowing evenly into the adjacent porous area.• Refer to Porous Pavement fact sheet for maintenance requirements related to pavers, modularblock and other porous materials.1 Compared to stormwater quality treatment control measures discussed in Chapter 6.Stormwater Quality Design Manual for the Sacramento and South Placer RegionsMay 2007AD-1
