Source Control Measure Fact SheetWaste Management AreasPurposeThis fact sheet specifies how to design waste andrecycling storage areas so that they aren’t sources ofpollutants to the storm drainage system and receivingwaters. A properly designed waste/recycling storagearea keeps rain, runoff, and other site water fromleaching away pollutants; minimizes the chance ofspills and leaks; and prevents any spilled or leakedwastes from entering the storm drainage system.Potential pollutants from waste includefats/oils/greases (from food), particulates, organicmatter, toxic chemicals, and more.Photo: City of FolsomApplicabilityRefer to Table 4-1 regarding the project land use types that need to comply with this fact sheet. Thedesign requirements provided in this fact sheet are primarily intended for new development. If applied tosignificant redevelopment, the requirements would only apply in the case of complete redesign of theportion of the facility involving the waste management/trash enclosure area(s).Design RequirementsTo protect water quality, design waste and recycling storage areas as explained in Table WM-1. Designrequirements in this fact sheet are intended to supplement (not supercede) those in other codes (such asthe Building, Fire, and Zoning Codes and the hazardous waste requirements in Title 22, California Codeof Regulations, as applicable). Discuss any potential conflicts with the local permitting agency early inthe planning process before proceeding with design. In addition, check with the appropriate waste haulerregarding design or access requirements.Operation and MaintenanceThe design features required by this fact sheet need tobe maintained and properly operated. This includesregular maintenance of the grease interceptor andhandling and disposal of materials which accumulatein the interceptor, and maintenance of covers andsanitary sewer connections, if applicable.Covered Storage for Waste and Recycling Bins andCompactor, Pleasanton, CA.
