3.0 JUSTIFICATION AND OBJECTIVES The ultimate goal of this project is to explore the use of soy protein as a sustainable alternative to synthetic polymer. The viability of this approach is more feasible with the use of extrusion; a well-established method currently being used by the food and plastics industry. As such, the first part of this project was to explore the thermoplastic extrusion of soy protein in the presence of plasticizers. From previous reports, biopolymers inherently have shortcomings in material properties in comparison to synthetic alternatives. However, recent research has increased the viability for a sustainable biocomposite with the use of cellulose fibers in reinforcing material properties. By isolating cellulose fibers from soy waste, the soy plant can be further exploited to create an enhanced soy-based bioplastic. Consequently, the second part of this project was to explore the extraction process for cellulose fibers from soy pods and stems. With the cellulose fibers extracted, a composite film with new material properties can be created. The last part of this project focused on incorporating the extracted cellulose fibers with soy protein extrusion to create a biocomposite film. The different material properties of the biocomposite structure were compared to pure soy protein films for analysis. follows: This thesis can be separated into three sections, the specific objectives of which are as Part I: Extrusion of Soy Protein Isolate Films 1) Thermoplastically convert commercial SPI to thin bioplastic film by the use of a single screw extruder 2) Increase understanding of protein extrusion 3) Characterize material properties of extruded soy bioplastic film Part II: Cellulose Extraction from Soy Pods and Stems 18
