4.3.7 MICROSTRUCTURE ANALYSIS Microstructure analysis of SPI films was completed using a scanning electron microscope (SEM S-570, Hitachi High Technologies Corporation, Tokyo, Japan) at an accelerating voltage of 10 kV. Conditioned samples were sputter coated with gold (20 nm) using a sputter coater (Model K550, Emitech, Ashford, Kent, England). Film surface and liquid nitrogen fractured cross sections were imaged for analysis. 4.3.8 FOURIER TRANSFORM INFRARED (FTIR) ANALYSIS SPI films were scanned using a FTIR spectrometer (IRPrestige21, Shimadzu Corp. Japan) equipped with an attenuated total reflection accessory (Pike Tech, Madison, WI, US). The resolution of the infrared spectra was collected at 4 cm -1 and each sample was scanned 50 times at room temperature (22 ± 2°C). 4.3.9 STATISTICAL ANALYSIS Analysis of variance was employed to analyze all results using SPSS (SPSS Inc., version 17.0). Levene’s Test was used to determine homogeneity of variance amongst results. Welch and Brown-Forsythe method was used to test for robustness of heterogeneous variances. Tukey’s test was used for post-hoc analysis. Significance level was set at P < 0.05. 26
