IOur Demand and Needfrom <strong>the</strong> <strong>Gita</strong>THE WORLD abounds with scriptures sacred and profane,with revelati<strong>on</strong>s and half-revelati<strong>on</strong>s, with religi<strong>on</strong>sand philosophies, sects and schools and systems. To <strong>the</strong>se<strong>the</strong> many minds of a half-ripe knowledge or no knowledge atall attach <strong>the</strong>mselves with exclusiveness and passi<strong>on</strong> and willhave it that this or <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r book is al<strong>on</strong>e <strong>the</strong> eternal Word ofGod and all o<strong>the</strong>rs are ei<strong>the</strong>r impostures or at best imperfectlyinspired, that this or that philosophy is <strong>the</strong> last word of <strong>the</strong>reas<strong>on</strong>ing intellect and o<strong>the</strong>r systems are ei<strong>the</strong>r errors or saved<strong>on</strong>ly by such partial truth in <strong>the</strong>m as links <strong>the</strong>m to <strong>the</strong> <strong>on</strong>etrue philosophical cult. Even <strong>the</strong> discoveries of physical Sciencehave been elevated into a creed and in its name religi<strong>on</strong> andspirituality banned as ignorance and superstiti<strong>on</strong>, philosophy asfrippery and mo<strong>on</strong>shine. And to <strong>the</strong>se bigoted exclusi<strong>on</strong>s andvain wranglings even <strong>the</strong> wise have often lent <strong>the</strong>mselves, misledby some spirit of darkness that has mingled with <strong>the</strong>ir light andovershadowed it with some cloud of intellectual egoism or spiritualpride. Mankind seems now indeed inclined to grow a littlemodester and wiser; we no l<strong>on</strong>ger slay our fellows in <strong>the</strong> nameof God’s truth or because <strong>the</strong>y have minds differently trainedor differently c<strong>on</strong>stituted from ours; we are less ready to curseand revile our neighbour because he is wicked or presumptuousenough to differ from us in opini<strong>on</strong>; we are ready even to admitthat Truth is everywhere and cannot be our sole m<strong>on</strong>opoly; weare beginning to look at o<strong>the</strong>r religi<strong>on</strong>s and philosophies for<strong>the</strong> truth and help <strong>the</strong>y c<strong>on</strong>tain and no l<strong>on</strong>ger merely in orderto damn <strong>the</strong>m as false or criticise what we c<strong>on</strong>ceive to be <strong>the</strong>irerrors. But we are still apt to declare that our truth gives us<strong>the</strong> supreme knowledge which o<strong>the</strong>r religi<strong>on</strong>s or philosophies
