XIThe Visi<strong>on</strong> of <strong>the</strong> World-Spirit 1The Double AspectEVEN WHILE <strong>the</strong> effects of <strong>the</strong> terrible aspect of this visi<strong>on</strong>are still up<strong>on</strong> him, <strong>the</strong> first words uttered by Arjunaafter <strong>the</strong> Godhead has spoken are eloquent of a greateruplifting and reassuring reality behind this face of death and thisdestructi<strong>on</strong>. “Rightly and in good place,” he cries, “O Krishna,does <strong>the</strong> world rejoice and take pleasure in thy name, <strong>the</strong> Rakshasasare fleeing from <strong>the</strong>e in terror to all <strong>the</strong> quarters and <strong>the</strong>companies of <strong>the</strong> Siddhas bow down before <strong>the</strong>e in adorati<strong>on</strong>.How should <strong>the</strong>y not do <strong>the</strong>e homage, O great Spirit? For thouart <strong>the</strong> original Creator and Doer of works and greater even thancreative Brahma. O thou Infinite, O thou Lord of <strong>the</strong> gods, Othou abode of <strong>the</strong> universe, thou art <strong>the</strong> Immutable and thou artwhat is and is not and thou art that which is <strong>the</strong> Supreme. Thouart <strong>the</strong> ancient Soul and <strong>the</strong> first and original Godhead and <strong>the</strong>supreme resting-place of this All; thou art <strong>the</strong> knower and thatwhich is to be known and <strong>the</strong> highest status; O infinite in form,by <strong>the</strong>e was extended <strong>the</strong> universe. Thou art Yama and Vayu andAgni and Soma and Varuna and Prajapati, fa<strong>the</strong>r of creatures,and <strong>the</strong> great-grandsire. Salutati<strong>on</strong> to <strong>the</strong>e a thousand times overand again and yet again salutati<strong>on</strong>, in fr<strong>on</strong>t and behind and fromevery side, for thou art each and all that is. Infinite in might andimmeasurable in strength of acti<strong>on</strong> thou pervadest all and artevery <strong>on</strong>e.”But this supreme universal Being has lived here before himwith <strong>the</strong> human face, in <strong>the</strong> mortal body, <strong>the</strong> divine Man, <strong>the</strong>embodied Godhead, <strong>the</strong> Avatar, and till now he has not knownhim. He has seen <strong>the</strong> humanity <strong>on</strong>ly and has treated <strong>the</strong> Divine as1 <strong>Gita</strong>, XI. 35-55.
