God in Power of Becoming 363in every directi<strong>on</strong>, milli<strong>on</strong>-bodied, myriad-minded, manifest ineach existence; we see his faces <strong>on</strong> all sides of us. Dhātā ’haṁviśvato-mukhaḥ. For simultaneously in all <strong>the</strong>se many milli<strong>on</strong>pers<strong>on</strong>s and things, sarva-bhūteṣu, <strong>the</strong>re works <strong>the</strong> mystery ofhis self and thought and force and his divine genius of creati<strong>on</strong>and his marvellous art of formati<strong>on</strong> and his impeccable orderingof relati<strong>on</strong>s and possibilities and inevitable c<strong>on</strong>sequences.He appears to us too in <strong>the</strong> universe as <strong>the</strong> universal spirit ofDestructi<strong>on</strong>, who seems to create <strong>on</strong>ly to undo his creati<strong>on</strong>sin <strong>the</strong> end, — “I am all-snatching Death,” ahaṁ mṛtyuḥ sarvaharaḥ.And yet his Power of becoming does not cease from itsworkings, for <strong>the</strong> force of rebirth and new creati<strong>on</strong> ever keepspace with <strong>the</strong> force of death and destructi<strong>on</strong>, — “and I am too<strong>the</strong> birth of all that shall come into being.” The divine Self inthings is <strong>the</strong> sustaining Spirit of <strong>the</strong> present, <strong>the</strong> withdrawingSpirit of <strong>the</strong> past, <strong>the</strong> creative Spirit of <strong>the</strong> future.Then am<strong>on</strong>g all <strong>the</strong>se living beings, cosmic godheads, superhumanand human and subhuman creatures, and amid all <strong>the</strong>sequalities, powers and objects, <strong>the</strong> chief, <strong>the</strong> head, <strong>the</strong> greatest inquality of each class is a special power of <strong>the</strong> becoming of <strong>the</strong>Godhead. I am, says <strong>the</strong> Godhead, Vishnu am<strong>on</strong>g <strong>the</strong> Adityas,Shiva am<strong>on</strong>g <strong>the</strong> Rudras, Indra am<strong>on</strong>g <strong>the</strong> gods, Prahlada am<strong>on</strong>g<strong>the</strong> Titans, Brihaspati <strong>the</strong> chief of <strong>the</strong> high priests of <strong>the</strong> world,Skanda <strong>the</strong> war-god, leader of <strong>the</strong> leaders of battle, Marichiam<strong>on</strong>g <strong>the</strong> Maruts, <strong>the</strong> lord of wealth am<strong>on</strong>g <strong>the</strong> Yakshas andRakshasas, <strong>the</strong> serpent Ananta am<strong>on</strong>g <strong>the</strong> Nagas, Agni am<strong>on</strong>g<strong>the</strong> Vasus, Chitraratha am<strong>on</strong>g <strong>the</strong> Gandharvas, Kandarpa <strong>the</strong>love-God am<strong>on</strong>g <strong>the</strong> progenitors, Varuna am<strong>on</strong>g <strong>the</strong> peoples of<strong>the</strong> sea, Aryaman am<strong>on</strong>g <strong>the</strong> Fa<strong>the</strong>rs, Narada am<strong>on</strong>g <strong>the</strong> divinesages, Yama lord of <strong>the</strong> Law am<strong>on</strong>g those who maintain rule andlaw, am<strong>on</strong>g <strong>the</strong> powers of storm <strong>the</strong> Wind-God. At <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r endof <strong>the</strong> scale I am <strong>the</strong> radiant sun am<strong>on</strong>g lights and splendours,<strong>the</strong> mo<strong>on</strong> am<strong>on</strong>g <strong>the</strong> stars of night, <strong>the</strong> ocean am<strong>on</strong>g <strong>the</strong> flowingwaters, Meru am<strong>on</strong>g <strong>the</strong> peaks of <strong>the</strong> world, Himalaya am<strong>on</strong>g<strong>the</strong> mountain-ranges, Ganges am<strong>on</strong>g <strong>the</strong> rivers, <strong>the</strong> divine thunderboltam<strong>on</strong>g weap<strong>on</strong>s.
