These fix forit <strong>the</strong> law of its being in becoming, <strong>the</strong> curve of its birth andpersistence and change, <strong>the</strong> force of its self-preservati<strong>on</strong> and selfincreasing,<strong>the</strong> lines of its stable and evolving self-expressi<strong>on</strong>and self-finding, <strong>the</strong> rules of its relati<strong>on</strong>s to all <strong>the</strong> rest of <strong>the</strong>expressi<strong>on</strong> of <strong>the</strong> Self in <strong>the</strong> universe. To follow <strong>the</strong> law of itsbeing, Swadharma, to develop <strong>the</strong> idea in its being, Swabhava, isits ground of safety, its right walk and procedure. That does notin <strong>the</strong> end chain down <strong>the</strong> soul to any present formulati<strong>on</strong>, butra<strong>the</strong>r by this way of development it enriches itself most surelywith new experiences assimilated to its own law and principleand can most powerfully grow and break at its hour bey<strong>on</strong>dpresent moulds to a higher self-expressi<strong>on</strong>. To be unable tomaintain its own law and principle, to fail to adapt itself toits envir<strong>on</strong>ment in such a way as to adapt <strong>the</strong> envir<strong>on</strong>ment toitself and make it useful to its own nature is to lose its self,forfeit its right of self, deviate from its way of self, is perditi<strong>on</strong>,vinaṣṭi, is falsehood, death, anguish of decay and dissoluti<strong>on</strong>and necessity of painful self-recovery often after eclipse anddisappearance, is <strong>the</strong> vain circuit of <strong>the</strong> wr<strong>on</strong>g road retardingour real progress. This law obtains in <strong>on</strong>e form or ano<strong>the</strong>r inall Nature; it underlies all that acti<strong>on</strong> of law of universality andlaw of variati<strong>on</strong> revealed to us by science. The same law obtainsin <strong>the</strong> life of <strong>the</strong> human being, his many lives in many humanbodies. Here it has an outward play and an inward spiritualtruth, and <strong>the</strong> outward play can <strong>on</strong>ly put <strong>on</strong> its full and realmeaning when we have found <strong>the</strong> inward spiritual truth andenlightened all our acti<strong>on</strong> with <strong>the</strong> values of <strong>the</strong> spirit. Thisgreat and desirable transformati<strong>on</strong> can be effected with rapidityand power in proporti<strong>on</strong> to our progress in self-knowledge.And first we have to see that <strong>the</strong> Swabhava means <strong>on</strong>e thingin <strong>the</strong> highest spiritual nature and takes quite ano<strong>the</strong>r form andsignificance in <strong>the</strong> lower nature of <strong>the</strong> three gunas.
