All <strong>the</strong> strife of our upward endeavour and seekingfinds its culminati<strong>on</strong> and ceases in a satisfied fulfilment when wecan rend <strong>the</strong> veil and get behind our apparent self to this realSelf, can realise our whole being in this true Lord of our being,can give up our pers<strong>on</strong>ality to and into this <strong>on</strong>e real Pers<strong>on</strong>,merge our ever-dispersed and ever-c<strong>on</strong>verging mental activitiesinto His plenary light, offer up our errant and struggling willand energies into His vast, luminous and undivided Will, at<strong>on</strong>ce renounce and satisfy all our dissipated outward-movingdesires and emoti<strong>on</strong>s in <strong>the</strong> plenitude of His self-existent Bliss.This is <strong>the</strong> world-Teacher of whose eternal knowledge all o<strong>the</strong>rhighest teaching is but <strong>the</strong> various reflecti<strong>on</strong> and partial word,this <strong>the</strong> Voice to which <strong>the</strong> hearing of our soul has to awaken.Arjuna, <strong>the</strong> disciple who receives his initiati<strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> battlefield,is a counterpart of this c<strong>on</strong>cepti<strong>on</strong>; he is <strong>the</strong> type of <strong>the</strong>struggling human soul who has not yet received <strong>the</strong> knowledge,but has grown fit to receive it by acti<strong>on</strong> in <strong>the</strong> world in a closecompani<strong>on</strong>ship and an increasing nearness to <strong>the</strong> higher anddivine Self in humanity. There is a method of explaining <strong>the</strong><strong>Gita</strong> in which not <strong>on</strong>ly this episode but <strong>the</strong> whole Mahabharatais turned into an allegory of <strong>the</strong> inner life and has nothingto do with our outward human life and acti<strong>on</strong>, but <strong>on</strong>ly with<strong>the</strong> battles of <strong>the</strong> soul and <strong>the</strong> powers that strive within us forpossessi<strong>on</strong>.
