The whole acti<strong>on</strong> of Nature is sucha sacrifice, — offered at first indeed to <strong>the</strong> divine Powers thatmove her and move in her, but <strong>the</strong>se powers are <strong>on</strong>ly limitedforms and names of <strong>the</strong> One and Illimitable. Man ordinarilyoffers his sacrifice openly or under a disguise to his own ego; hisoblati<strong>on</strong> is <strong>the</strong> false acti<strong>on</strong> of his own self-will and ignorance. Orhe offers his knowledge, acti<strong>on</strong>, aspirati<strong>on</strong>, works of energy andeffort to <strong>the</strong> gods for partial, temporal and pers<strong>on</strong>al aims. Theman of knowledge, <strong>the</strong> liberated soul offers <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> c<strong>on</strong>trary allhis activities to <strong>the</strong> <strong>on</strong>e eternal Godhead without any attachmentto <strong>the</strong>ir fruit or to <strong>the</strong> satisfacti<strong>on</strong> of his lower pers<strong>on</strong>al desires.He works for God, not for himself, for <strong>the</strong> universal welfare,for <strong>the</strong> Soul of <strong>the</strong> world and not for any particular objectwhich is of his own pers<strong>on</strong>al creati<strong>on</strong> or for any c<strong>on</strong>structi<strong>on</strong>of his mental will or object of his vital l<strong>on</strong>gings, as a divineagent, not as a principal and separate profiteer in <strong>the</strong> worldcommerce.And this, it must be noted, is a thing that cannot bereally d<strong>on</strong>e except in proporti<strong>on</strong> as <strong>the</strong> mind arrives at equality,universality, wide impers<strong>on</strong>ality, and a clear freedom from everydisguise of <strong>the</strong> insistent ego: for without <strong>the</strong>se things <strong>the</strong> claimto be thus acting is a pretensi<strong>on</strong> or an illusi<strong>on</strong>. The whole acti<strong>on</strong>of <strong>the</strong> world is <strong>the</strong> business of <strong>the</strong> Lord of <strong>the</strong> universe, <strong>the</strong>c<strong>on</strong>cern of <strong>the</strong> self-existent Spirit of whom it is <strong>the</strong> unceasingcreati<strong>on</strong>, <strong>the</strong> progressive becoming, <strong>the</strong> significant manifestati<strong>on</strong>and living symbol in Nature. The fruits are his, <strong>the</strong> results arethose determined by him and our pers<strong>on</strong>al acti<strong>on</strong> is <strong>on</strong>ly a minorc<strong>on</strong>tributi<strong>on</strong> ruled or overruled, so far as its motive is an egoisticclaim, by this Self and Spirit in us who is <strong>the</strong> Self and Spirit inall and governs things for <strong>the</strong> universal end and good and notfor <strong>the</strong> sake of our ego. To work impers<strong>on</strong>ally, desirelessly andwithout attachment to <strong>the</strong> fruits of our work, for <strong>the</strong> sake ofGod and <strong>the</strong> world and <strong>the</strong> greater Self and <strong>the</strong> fulfilment of<strong>the</strong> universal will, — this is <strong>the</strong> first step towards liberati<strong>on</strong> andperfecti<strong>on</strong>.But bey<strong>on</strong>d this step <strong>the</strong>re lies that o<strong>the</strong>r greater moti<strong>on</strong>,<strong>the</strong> inner surrender of all our acti<strong>on</strong>s to <strong>the</strong> Divinity within us.For it is infinite Nature that impels our works and a divine
