If, assenting to some idea of Godextended in <strong>the</strong> things of <strong>the</strong> cosmos, we see him in ideal lightof knowledge and greatness of power and charm of beauty andbeneficence of love and ample largeness of spirit, how shall weavoid <strong>the</strong> breaking of <strong>the</strong> unity by <strong>the</strong>ir opposites which in actualfact cling to <strong>the</strong>se high things and envelop <strong>the</strong>m and obscure?And if in spite of <strong>the</strong> limitati<strong>on</strong>s of human mind and naturewe can see God in <strong>the</strong> man of God, how shall we see him inthose who oppose him and represent in act and nature all thatwe c<strong>on</strong>ceive of as undivine? If Narayana is without difficultyvisible in <strong>the</strong> sage and <strong>the</strong> saint, how shall he be easily visibleto us in <strong>the</strong> sinner, <strong>the</strong> criminal, <strong>the</strong> harlot and <strong>the</strong> outcaste? Toall <strong>the</strong> differentiati<strong>on</strong>s of <strong>the</strong> world-existence <strong>the</strong> sage, lookingeverywhere for <strong>the</strong> supreme purity and <strong>on</strong>eness, returns <strong>the</strong> austerecry, “not this, not this,” neti neti. Eveniftomanythingsin <strong>the</strong> world we give a willing or reluctant assent and admit <strong>the</strong>Divine in <strong>the</strong> universe, still before most must not <strong>the</strong> mind persistin that cry “not this, not this”? Here c<strong>on</strong>stantly <strong>the</strong> assent of<strong>the</strong> understanding, <strong>the</strong> c<strong>on</strong>sent of <strong>the</strong> will and <strong>the</strong> heart’s faithbecome difficult to a human mentality anchored always <strong>on</strong> phenomen<strong>on</strong>and appearance. At least some compelling indicati<strong>on</strong>sare needed, some links and bridges, some supports to <strong>the</strong> difficulteffort at <strong>on</strong>eness.Arjuna, though he accepts <strong>the</strong> revelati<strong>on</strong> of Vasudeva as alland though his heart is full of <strong>the</strong> delight of it, — for alreadyhe finds that it is delivering him from <strong>the</strong> perplexity and stumblingdifferentiati<strong>on</strong>s of his mind which was crying for a clue, aguiding truth amid <strong>the</strong> bewildering problems of a world of oppositi<strong>on</strong>s,and it is to his hearing <strong>the</strong> nectar of immortality, amṛtam,— yet feels <strong>the</strong> need of such supports and indices. He feels that<strong>the</strong>y are indispensable to overcome <strong>the</strong> difficulty of a completeand firm realisati<strong>on</strong>; for how else can this knowledge be made athing of <strong>the</strong> heart and life?
