Our Demand and Need from <strong>the</strong> <strong>Gita</strong> 5its exact c<strong>on</strong>tent and associati<strong>on</strong> that we can never be quite sureof understanding an ancient book of this kind precisely in <strong>the</strong>sense and spirit it bore to its c<strong>on</strong>temporaries. What is of entirelypermanent value is that which besides being universal has beenexperienced, lived and seen with a higher than <strong>the</strong> intellectualvisi<strong>on</strong>.I hold it <strong>the</strong>refore of small importance to extract from <strong>the</strong><strong>Gita</strong> its exact metaphysical c<strong>on</strong>notati<strong>on</strong> as it was understoodby <strong>the</strong> men of <strong>the</strong> time, — even if that were accurately possible.That it is not possible, is shown by <strong>the</strong> divergence of <strong>the</strong> originalcommentaries which have been and are still being written up<strong>on</strong>it; for <strong>the</strong>y all agree in each disagreeing with all <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>rs,each finds in <strong>the</strong> <strong>Gita</strong> its own system of metaphysics and trendof religious thought. Nor will even <strong>the</strong> most painstaking anddisinterested scholarship and <strong>the</strong> most luminous <strong>the</strong>ories of <strong>the</strong>historical development of Indian philosophy save us from inevitableerror. But what we can do with profit is to seek in <strong>the</strong><strong>Gita</strong> for <strong>the</strong> actual living truths it c<strong>on</strong>tains, apart from <strong>the</strong>irmetaphysical form, to extract from it what can help us or <strong>the</strong>world at large and to put it in <strong>the</strong> most natural and vital formand expressi<strong>on</strong> we can find that will be suitable to <strong>the</strong> mentalityand helpful to <strong>the</strong> spiritual needs of our present-day humanity.No doubt in this attempt we may mix a good deal of error bornof our own individuality and of <strong>the</strong> ideas in which we live, asdid greater men before us, but if we steep ourselves in <strong>the</strong> spiritof this great Scripture and, above all, if we have tried to live inthat spirit, we may be sure of finding in it as much real truthas we are capable of receiving as well as <strong>the</strong> spiritual influenceand actual help that, pers<strong>on</strong>ally, we were intended to derivefrom it. And that is after all what Scriptures were written togive; <strong>the</strong> rest is academical disputati<strong>on</strong> or <strong>the</strong>ological dogma.Only those Scriptures, religi<strong>on</strong>s, philosophies which can be thusc<strong>on</strong>stantly renewed, relived, <strong>the</strong>ir stuff of permanent truth c<strong>on</strong>stantlyreshaped and developed in <strong>the</strong> inner thought and spiritualexperience of a developing humanity, c<strong>on</strong>tinue to be of livingimportance to mankind. The rest remain as m<strong>on</strong>uments of <strong>the</strong>past, but have no actual force or vital impulse for <strong>the</strong> future.
