It knows him as <strong>the</strong> Master and ordainer ofall universal and of every individual dispensati<strong>on</strong>. The worldand fate and uncertain eventuality cannot terrify, <strong>the</strong> aspect ofsuffering and evil cannot bewilder <strong>the</strong> man who has surrenderedhimself to <strong>the</strong> Eternal. God to <strong>the</strong> soul that sees is <strong>the</strong> path andGod is <strong>the</strong> goal of his journey, a path in which <strong>the</strong>re is no selflosingand a goal to which his wisely guided steps are surelyarriving at every moment. He knows <strong>the</strong> Godhead as <strong>the</strong> masterof his and all being, <strong>the</strong> upholder of his nature, <strong>the</strong> husbandof <strong>the</strong> nature-soul, its lover and cherisher, <strong>the</strong> inner witness ofall his thoughts and acti<strong>on</strong>s. God is his house and country, <strong>the</strong>refuge of his seekings and desires, <strong>the</strong> wise and close and benignantfriend of all beings. All birth and status and destructi<strong>on</strong>of apparent existences is to his visi<strong>on</strong> and experience <strong>the</strong> Onewho brings forward, maintains and withdraws his temporal selfmanifestati<strong>on</strong>in its system of perpetual recurrences. He al<strong>on</strong>e is<strong>the</strong> imperishable seed and origin of all that seem to be born andperish and <strong>the</strong>ir eternal resting-place in <strong>the</strong>ir n<strong>on</strong>-manifestati<strong>on</strong>.It is he that burns in <strong>the</strong> heat of <strong>the</strong> sun and <strong>the</strong> flame; it ishe who is <strong>the</strong> plenty of <strong>the</strong> rain and its withholding; he is allthis physical Nature and her workings. Death is his mask andimmortality is his self-revelati<strong>on</strong>. All that we call existent is heand all that we look up<strong>on</strong> as n<strong>on</strong>-existent still is <strong>the</strong>re secret in<strong>the</strong> Infinite and is part of <strong>the</strong> mysterious being of <strong>the</strong> Ineffable. 6Nothing but <strong>the</strong> highest knowledge and adorati<strong>on</strong>, no o<strong>the</strong>rway than an entire self-giving and surrender to this Highest whois all, will bring us to <strong>the</strong> Highest. O<strong>the</strong>r religi<strong>on</strong>, o<strong>the</strong>r worship,o<strong>the</strong>r knowledge, o<strong>the</strong>r seeking has always its fruits, but <strong>the</strong>seare transient and limited to <strong>the</strong> enjoyment of divine symbolsand appearances. There are always open for our following accordingto <strong>the</strong> balance of our mentality an outer and an inmostknowledge, an outer and an inmost seeking. Outward religi<strong>on</strong> is<strong>the</strong> worship of an outward deity and <strong>the</strong> pursuit of an externalbeatitude: its devotees purify <strong>the</strong>ir c<strong>on</strong>duct from sin and attain6 IX. 17-19.
