386 <str<strong>on</strong>g>Essays</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Gita</strong>has been sown and a harvest that must be reaped. They whohave sown <strong>the</strong> wind, must reap <strong>the</strong> whirlwind. Nor indeed willhis own nature allow him any real abstenti<strong>on</strong>, prakṛtis tvāṁniyokṣyati. This <strong>the</strong> Teacher tells Arjuna at <strong>the</strong> close, “Thatwhich in thy egoism thou thinkest saying, I will not fight, vainis this thy resolve: Nature shall yoke <strong>the</strong>e to thy work. Boundby thy own acti<strong>on</strong> which is born of <strong>the</strong> law of thy being, whatfrom delusi<strong>on</strong> thou desirest not to do, that thou shalt do evenperforce.” Then to give ano<strong>the</strong>r turn, to use some kind of soulforce, spiritual method and power, not physical weap<strong>on</strong>s? Butthat is <strong>on</strong>ly ano<strong>the</strong>r form of <strong>the</strong> same acti<strong>on</strong>; <strong>the</strong> destructi<strong>on</strong>will still take place, and <strong>the</strong> turn given too will be not what <strong>the</strong>individual ego, but what <strong>the</strong> World-Spirit wills. Even, <strong>the</strong> forceof destructi<strong>on</strong> may feed <strong>on</strong> this new power, may get a moreformidable impetus and Kali arise filling <strong>the</strong> world with a moreterrible sound of her laughters. No real peace can be till <strong>the</strong> heartof man deserves peace; <strong>the</strong> law of Vishnu cannot prevail till <strong>the</strong>debt to Rudra is paid. To turn aside <strong>the</strong>n and preach to a stillunevolved mankind <strong>the</strong> law of love and <strong>on</strong>eness? Teachers of<strong>the</strong> law of love and <strong>on</strong>eness <strong>the</strong>re must be, for by that way mustcome <strong>the</strong> ultimate salvati<strong>on</strong>. But not till <strong>the</strong> Time-Spirit in manis ready, can <strong>the</strong> inner and ultimate prevail over <strong>the</strong> outer andimmediate reality. Christ and Buddha have come and g<strong>on</strong>e, butit is Rudra who still holds <strong>the</strong> world in <strong>the</strong> hollow of his hand.And meanwhile <strong>the</strong> fierce forward labour of mankind tormentedand oppressed by <strong>the</strong> Powers that are profiteers of egoistic forceand <strong>the</strong>ir servants cries for <strong>the</strong> sword of <strong>the</strong> Hero of <strong>the</strong> struggleand <strong>the</strong> word of its prophet.The highest way appointed for him is to carry out <strong>the</strong> will ofGod without egoism, as <strong>the</strong> human occasi<strong>on</strong> and instrument ofthat which he sees to be decreed, with <strong>the</strong> c<strong>on</strong>stant supportingmemory of <strong>the</strong> Godhead in himself and man, mām anusmaran,and in whatever ways are appointed for him by <strong>the</strong> Lord of hisNature. Nimittamātraṁ bhava savyasācin. He will not cherishpers<strong>on</strong>al enmity, anger, hatred, egoistic desire and passi<strong>on</strong>, willnot hasten towards strife or lust after violence and destructi<strong>on</strong>like <strong>the</strong> fierce Asura, but he will do his work, lokasaṅgrahāya.
