SP-2000/X-YMaintenance And RepairBrushless MotorsSeven brushless motors and their switching drivers are used in the SP2000/X-Y.One of the advantages of brushless motors is that they are quieter because theyavoid the screechy high-frequency sound emitted by the brushes of conventionalDC brush motors and tachometers. Tachometers are eliminated completelybecause the velocity information is derived from the Hall effect encoders.Brushless motors are far more reliable and are expected to last the life of theproduct. In addition, the switching drivers are very efficient, so power consumptionis reduced and battery operating time is extended. Motor servicing islimited to verifying the integrity of the two quadrature signals coming back fromeach motor.Motor Drive AmplifiersThe Motor Drive Amplifiers amplify the demand signal from the 4 ChannelBoard to generate a torque-producing current that drives the motor. In addition,they electronically commutate the brushless motor by processing the TTL phasingsignals from the hall encoders. There are no adjustments on the Motor DriveAmplifiers. Each amplifier does have pluggable, factory selected current-settingresistors.The Motor Drive Amplifiers for steer and drive are not serviceable at the componentlevel in the field. However, they can be swapped with each other or thepan/tilt Motor Drive Amplifiers in the head to isolate a fault. Note that the MotorDrive Amplifier for column elevation is a 60V amplifier which cannot beswapped for troubleshooting.Contact Vinten to arrange a board exchange if necessary. If replacement amplifiersare installed, the resistor values in the pluggable resistor packs must bechecked and to be sure that they are the same as the original factory installedamplifiers.4-36 User Manual
