<strong>14</strong>-<strong>19</strong> PATHFINDERS: THE SECOND YEARother pathfinders. The adviser is working closely with the LEA Adviser for Pupil Support,Guidance & Personal Development, school-based PAs <strong>and</strong> the pathfinder business linkcoordina<strong>to</strong>rs.411. Men<strong>to</strong>ring is seen as another means of raising aspirations <strong>and</strong> a range of men<strong>to</strong>ringprogrammes have been developed. The pathfinder has taken considerable care <strong>to</strong> targetstudents throughout the age range <strong>and</strong> ability levels for men<strong>to</strong>ring support. For example,men<strong>to</strong>rs from two large financial <strong>and</strong> legal companies have had email contact with studentson post-16 business studies courses in three of the schools. The men<strong>to</strong>rs <strong>and</strong> students haveworked through a 10 week course structured around a European Union module. At the end ofthe module the students will visit the company. These students had <strong>to</strong> apply <strong>to</strong> take part <strong>and</strong>had <strong>to</strong> justify their inclusion in the programme.412. Another company is providing men<strong>to</strong>ring for younger pupils <strong>and</strong> some year 10business studies students. Men<strong>to</strong>ring by university students is also about <strong>to</strong> start. TheWorkwise programme, organised by the Chamber of Commerce, also supports students whoare disaffected or not achieving st<strong>and</strong>ards expected of them. The Skillforce programme isalso helping <strong>to</strong> raise the aspirations <strong>and</strong> self respect of 54 students in three of the schools.These pupils are mainly boys from year 10 who are in danger of dropping out of education.413. Men<strong>to</strong>ring has also been targeted at gifted <strong>and</strong> talented students. The coordina<strong>to</strong>rs inthe four schools are working <strong>to</strong>gether <strong>to</strong> provide joint activities. Media being used includeemail <strong>and</strong> video-conferencing.4<strong>14</strong>. Men<strong>to</strong>ring has also been extended <strong>to</strong> staff. Two of the headteachers are beingmen<strong>to</strong>red on different aspects of their work through a Business in the Community Partners inLeadership scheme.Summary <strong>and</strong> emerging issues415. The Norfolk pathfinder is targeted on one area of the LEA <strong>and</strong> a relatively smallnumber of schools. It is aiming <strong>to</strong> build on existing employer links <strong>and</strong> substantially exp<strong>and</strong><strong>and</strong> deepen these.
