<strong>14</strong>-<strong>19</strong> PATHFINDERS: THE SECOND YEAR<strong>14</strong>-16 curriculum particularly through the introduction of a range of differentiated vocationalopportunities. This would build upon the earlier work developed through the funding streamsidentified above. It will be linked up with the Objective 1 Project ‘16-<strong>19</strong> Progression inEducation’ in the FE colleges <strong>to</strong> ensure the continuity of the Pathways in<strong>to</strong> post 16 <strong>and</strong>establish the <strong>14</strong>-<strong>19</strong> continuum.454. The second thrust focused upon building links with a range of employment sec<strong>to</strong>rs,identifying skills shortages, promoting links betweens employers <strong>and</strong> educational institutions<strong>and</strong> helping <strong>to</strong> shape curriculum planning, provision <strong>and</strong> implementation. This work was <strong>to</strong>be carried out by sec<strong>to</strong>r intermediaries (sec<strong>to</strong>r-specific employer liaison coordina<strong>to</strong>rs) whowould broker links between the sec<strong>to</strong>rs <strong>and</strong> the schools <strong>and</strong> college.455. The two approaches were intended <strong>to</strong> work closely <strong>to</strong>gether in order <strong>to</strong> develop amore diverse <strong>and</strong> flexible curriculum, which would offer greater choice <strong>and</strong> relevance <strong>to</strong>learners while reflecting the regeneration needs of Sheffield.456. In order <strong>to</strong> achieve these objectives the pathfinder also needed <strong>to</strong> further strengthencollaboration between the partners <strong>and</strong> <strong>to</strong> strengthen advice <strong>and</strong> guidance so that studentscould be helped <strong>to</strong> choose appropriate curriculum pathways, while continuing <strong>to</strong> improve thequality of delivery in relation <strong>to</strong> teaching <strong>and</strong> learning <strong>and</strong> achievement in recognisedqualificationsMain developments457. As in other Phase Two Pathfinders the major focus of the first year has been <strong>to</strong> put inplace arrangements for September 2004 at which point over 3,000 <strong>14</strong>-16 year olds will haveembarked upon vocational courses. It is estimated that around 60% of the year 10 cohort inthe city will be taking at least one vocational course in 2004/05.458. A very wide range of vocational provision has been developed. Courses on offerinclude GCSEs in vocational subjects in nine subjects <strong>and</strong> GNVQs including Engineering,Manufacturing <strong>and</strong> Health & Social Care. A range of NVQs will also be available including136
