<strong>14</strong>-<strong>19</strong> PATHFINDERS: THE SECOND YEARSECTION FOUR: CURRICULAR PROVISIONKey points‣ The broadening of curricular provision has been key feature of all the <strong>14</strong>-<strong>19</strong>Pathfinders‣ Different pathfinders have given somewhat different emphases <strong>to</strong> different aspects ofcurriculum provision‣ Most pathfinders have focused strongly upon the promotion of work-related learning,<strong>and</strong> innovative vocational learning‣ There has been emphasis in most pathfinders on the <strong>14</strong>-16 curriculum‣ A minority of pathfinders have emphasised curriculum broadening at 16-<strong>19</strong>‣ Only some pathfinders have focused upon developments in work-based learning,enterprise learning <strong>and</strong> variations in the pace of learning but where these have beenthe foci significant progress has been made‣ There has been increased attention <strong>to</strong> the development <strong>and</strong> promotion of <strong>14</strong>-<strong>19</strong>progression routes <strong>and</strong> on the development of the <strong>14</strong>-<strong>19</strong> phase as a whole‣ Pathfinders vary in the emphasis they give <strong>to</strong> promoting post-<strong>19</strong> progression <strong>and</strong>where this is a focus attention is almost always directed <strong>to</strong> progression in<strong>to</strong> highereducation107. We turn now <strong>to</strong> the first of two major sections on the outcomes or products of thecollaborative approaches described in the previous section. Here we focus upon a range ofcurricular approaches which have been developed under the auspices of pathfinder. Wedescribe: approaches <strong>to</strong> providing broader curricular offerings <strong>and</strong> work-related learning;innovative approaches <strong>to</strong> vocational learning; the development of work-based learning; thepromotion of enterprise learning; variations in the pace of learning; the development of <strong>14</strong>-<strong>19</strong>progression routes <strong>and</strong> the promotion of post-<strong>19</strong> progression.108. We showed in the previous section that there were some significant variationsbetween pathfinders in the emphasis which they gave <strong>to</strong> these different approaches.However, this should not disguise the powerful curricular effects of the pathfinder initiative.To a large extent it has been a curriculum initiative aiming <strong>to</strong> raise participation, retention,37
