14-19 PATHFINDERS: THE SECOND YEARSECTION SEVEN: IMPLICATIONS FOR POLICY ANDPRACTICEKey points‣ Sustainability is a key theme as the 14-19 Pathfinders move towards the end of theirfunding period‣ Sustainability will require the maintenance and extension of collaboration, curriculumprovision and innovation‣ The establishment of financial underpinning and increased capacity are importantelements of sustainability‣ Maintaining or developing increased commitment amongst partners is likely to be keyto sustainability‣ The continued reform of the 14-19 phase will require that fundamental curricularprinciples concerning breadth, differentiation, relationships between academic andvocational learning and different forms of vocationalism be kept continually underreview‣ Information, advice, guidance and support continues to be crucial to the developmentof the 14-19 phase. Policy-makers and practitioners need to continue to identifystrengths and weaknesses in current provision and devise ways in which problems canbe tackled‣ 14-19 Pathfinders have sought to bring about change through a combination of centralsteering and local responsiveness. It will be important for policy-makers andpractitioners to review this approach to bringing about change in order to identify itsstrengths and weaknesses and its continued potential for promoting change in the 14-19 phase.536. In this final section of the report we focus upon some of the implications of the keyfindings for policy and practice. We do so under four main headings: sustainability;curriculum provision and practice; student support and guidance; local responsiveness andcentral steering.158
