<strong>14</strong>-<strong>19</strong> PATHFINDERS: THE SECOND YEARbusiness links coordina<strong>to</strong>rs. Much has also been done <strong>to</strong> enhance <strong>and</strong> broaden thecurriculum, especially through the growth of school/college links supported by the IFprogramme. Strengthening of advice <strong>and</strong> guidance <strong>and</strong> men<strong>to</strong>ring are being developed asstrategies for raising aspirations among targeted groups of learners.416. The pathfinder, through strong links <strong>to</strong> the LEA ICT development strategy, is looking<strong>to</strong> ways in which e-learning <strong>and</strong> video-conferencing can be used <strong>to</strong> enhance <strong>and</strong> extend thecurriculum.417. One interesting thrust, which matches developments in other rural pathfinders, is thesuggestion that local skills centres should be established <strong>to</strong> provide vocational learning <strong>and</strong>thus limit the need for lengthy journeys <strong>to</strong> access college resources. An alternative approachmay be <strong>to</strong> link with local training providers in order <strong>to</strong> access additional vocational learningcapacity. We found that currently training providers were not playing a major role in thepathfinder <strong>and</strong> this reflected the relative neglect of work-based learning in the pathfinder.125
