d) In addition, all hazardous substances <strong>and</strong> chemicals, where possible, shall conform <strong>to</strong> theglobally harmonized system (GHS) label requirements.7. Disposal of empty containersa) Each Group I Category B hazardous substances shall be disposed off in terms of therequirements as stipulated in R 453 of 25 March 1977.b) All expired or obsolete hazardous substances <strong>and</strong> chemicals shall be disposed off appropriately.c) No hazardous substances <strong>and</strong> chemicals shall be disposed off in<strong>to</strong> a watercourse, seweragesystem or drainage system.8. Occupational <strong>Health</strong> <strong>and</strong> Safetya) All employees or workers shall be provided with personal protective equipment (PPE) (gloves,boots, aprons <strong>and</strong> mask) at all times.b) PPEs shall be maintained at all times.c) All employees or workers shall be trained on hazardous substances <strong>and</strong> chemical safety issues.d) Procedures <strong>and</strong> plans shall be in place for accidental spillages <strong>and</strong> leakages.9. Detention, seizure <strong>and</strong> sampling of hazardous substancesa) This shall be conducted in terms of section 9 of the R 453 of 25 March 1977.10. Import <strong>and</strong> export of hazardous substances <strong>and</strong> chemicalsb) The import <strong>and</strong> export of hazardous substances <strong>and</strong> chemicals shall also comply with theprocedures as set out in the various multi-lateral environmental agreements, which include theS<strong>to</strong>ckholm Convention, Rotterdam Convention <strong>and</strong> Basel Convention.11. Reporting of pesticide / chemical poisoning incidentsa) All pesticide/chemical poisoning incidents shall be reported in terms of pesticide/chemical incidentreport form as adapted from the Rotterdam Convention.b) All reported cases of pesticide <strong>and</strong> chemical poisonings from the Poison Information Centre shallbe reported <strong>to</strong> the municipality concerned.c) EHPs shall investigate <strong>and</strong> report on all cases of pesticide <strong>and</strong> chemical poisonings.DOH. <strong>Norms</strong> <strong>and</strong> st<strong>and</strong>ards for environmental health in South Africa Feb 2013 139
