t) A separate room or area with separate designated counters, with an impervious surface must beprovided for the receipt <strong>and</strong> dispatch of articles;u) When five or more persons of the same sex are employed on the premises, adequate separatechange rooms must be provided for male <strong>and</strong> female employees <strong>and</strong> designated for each sex;v) Change rooms must be provide with;• An adequate locker for every employees;• A h<strong>and</strong> wash basin provided with a supply of running hot <strong>and</strong> cold potable water; <strong>and</strong>• And adequate supply of soap <strong>and</strong> disposable <strong>to</strong>wels at every h<strong>and</strong> wash basin.w) All machinery <strong>and</strong> equipment must be equipped with adequate suction fans <strong>to</strong> remove any noxiousgas, steam <strong>and</strong> hot air from any room <strong>and</strong> <strong>to</strong> release it in the open air in an adequate manner;x) If nappies are laundered on the premises, a separate pre-rinsing area must be provided for rinsing ofnappies prior <strong>to</strong> washing;y) An approved, suitable <strong>and</strong> effective means of drainage <strong>and</strong> sewage disposal must be available on thepremises;z) The premises of a dry-cleaning <strong>and</strong> laundry establishments, all fittings, equipments <strong>and</strong> appliances<strong>and</strong> machinery must be kept clean, hygienic <strong>and</strong> in good repair at all times;aa) Equipment for fire fighting <strong>and</strong> control of accidental fires should be available on the premises;bb) A tea kitchen provided with a single-basin stainless steel sink, with a constant supply of hot <strong>and</strong> coldrunning potable water must be provided separately, <strong>to</strong> meet the needs of employees on the premises;<strong>and</strong>cc) Acceptable waste management strategies must be utilised <strong>to</strong> h<strong>and</strong>led all waste generated on thepremises (provision of refuse bins for collection of waste, adequate waste s<strong>to</strong>rage prior <strong>to</strong> disposal<strong>and</strong> disposal by municipality or other approved authority).SECTION 11: CLINICS, INCLUDING SURGERIES AND OTHER MEDICAL COMPLEXESFor the purpose of this document, surgeries, day clinics <strong>and</strong> other medical complexes refers <strong>to</strong> privatedoc<strong>to</strong>r’s surgeries, private <strong>and</strong> public clinics, medical complexes, dentists surgeries, pharmacists,excluding public <strong>and</strong> private hospitals <strong>and</strong> facilities providing in-patient services.1. NORMS1.1 The premises facilities <strong>and</strong> infrastructure in compliance with environmental health <strong>and</strong> occupationalhygiene requirements as well as the Core St<strong>and</strong>ards for <strong>Health</strong> Establishments in South Africa.1.2 Building structure <strong>and</strong> facilities in compliance with the requirements of the <strong>National</strong> BuildingRegulations <strong>and</strong> the Building St<strong>and</strong>ards Act 103 of 1977 <strong>and</strong> SANS 10400.1.3 The use of equipment, material or substances by workers in accordance with the provisions as se<strong>to</strong>ut in the Occupational <strong>Health</strong> <strong>and</strong> Safety Act 85 of 1993.1.4 Fire fighting <strong>and</strong> control equipment available <strong>and</strong> in compliance <strong>to</strong> the local municipality firedepartment requirements.1.5 Potable water available, in compliance <strong>to</strong> SANS 241 available <strong>and</strong> within 200m of the premises, 24hours a day, at a flow rate of not less than 10liters per minute, 7 days a week.1.6 Adequate basic sanitation available within 200m of the premises. If non-water borne sanitary facilitiesis used, must be Ventilated Improved Pit (VIP) <strong>to</strong>ilets, well constructed <strong>to</strong> agreed st<strong>and</strong>ards asspecified in the RDP Guidelines.2. ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH MONITORING STANDARDS2.1 <strong>Environmental</strong> health inspections of clinics should be conducted at least once a year.2.2 Inspection checklists should be designed for utilization during all environmental health inspections.2.3 An inspection report, including the relevant recommendations must be issued <strong>to</strong> the person in chargeafter every inspection is conducted.2.4 EH must maintain a database of clinics in their local municipality for control <strong>and</strong> moni<strong>to</strong>ring purposes.2.5 Inspections should include the assessment of aspects such as ventilation, indoor air quality, lighting,structural safety of the premises, as well as other dirty <strong>and</strong> unsatisfac<strong>to</strong>ry health conditions.3.
