• Liquid soap;• First aid instruction book; <strong>and</strong>• Disposable glovesx) Adequate number of <strong>to</strong>wels must be available for various uses by cus<strong>to</strong>mers.y) Laundry facilities for the washing of all linen <strong>and</strong> <strong>to</strong>wels must be provided on the premises.z) If beverages are provided on the premises, a separate area must be provided equipped with a facilityfor cleaning crockery <strong>and</strong> utensils for that purpose.3.2 The use of ultra-violet radiation for tanninga) Persons under the age of 18 may not be allowed <strong>to</strong> make use of or operate, or <strong>to</strong> be in contact withany operations of the sunbed business on the premises.b) Users of sunbeds must be provided with all relevant health information in relation <strong>to</strong> the use ofsunbeds, which should be placed in a conspicuous place on the premises, for easy access by theusers.c) Adequate protective eye wear must be available for use by the users at all times during tanning, <strong>and</strong>if not disposable, the eye wear must be cleaned <strong>and</strong> disinfected after each use.d) A sunbed business should keep records of:• All clients that uses their services; including their contact details <strong>and</strong> residential addresses;• Incidences, including the effects thereof, experienced by clients, during sunbed usage;• Maintenance, service <strong>and</strong> inspection moni<strong>to</strong>ring; which should all be kept for a period of at least 3 yrsbefore discarding.SECTION 9: SWIMMING POOLS AND SPA BATHSFor the purpose of this document swimming pools shall refer <strong>to</strong> public swimming pools, as well as pools<strong>and</strong> spa baths located in accommodation establishments, beauty salons or spas.1. NORMS1.1 Swimming pools <strong>and</strong> spa baths operated under a valid <strong>Health</strong> Certificate issued by an <strong>Environmental</strong><strong>Health</strong> Practitioner of a relevant health authority/municipality, <strong>to</strong> the effect that the premises <strong>and</strong>general facilities comply with environmental health requirements.1.2 The quality of the swimming pool water in compliance with section………of the norms <strong>and</strong> st<strong>and</strong>ardsfor water quality moni<strong>to</strong>ring <strong>and</strong> the st<strong>and</strong>ards as specified in the WHO Guidelines for RecreationalWater environments.1.3 The premises promote the health <strong>and</strong> safety <strong>to</strong> users of the facility.2. ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH MONITORING STANDARDS2.1 <strong>Environmental</strong> health inspections of swimming pools <strong>and</strong> spa baths should be conducted at leasttwice a year (or not less than once in a year). The inspection <strong>to</strong> include the moni<strong>to</strong>ring of the quality ofthe water of swimming pools <strong>and</strong> spa baths.2.2 A record of water quality of each swimming pool should be kept by an EHP <strong>and</strong>/or poolsupervisor/manager.2.3 An inspection report, with relevant health recommendations should be issued <strong>to</strong> the person in chargeafter every inspection is conducted.2.4 <strong>Health</strong> education should be an integral part of all environmental health inspections conducted.3. STANDARDS FOR SWIMMING POOLS AND SPA BATHSAn EHP should assess the conditions of swimming pools <strong>and</strong> spa baths <strong>to</strong> ensure compliance with thefollowing requirements:3.1 Structural <strong>and</strong> physical facilitiesa) Every swimming pool must be surrounded by a wall or fence as prescribed by the <strong>National</strong> BuildingRegulations <strong>and</strong> the Building St<strong>and</strong>ards Act.DOH. <strong>Norms</strong> <strong>and</strong> st<strong>and</strong>ards for environmental health in South Africa Feb 2013 41
