d) All bedding must be removed from any housing at least once every seven days <strong>and</strong> s<strong>to</strong>re it in amanure receptacle or manure container or area, until is removed from the premises.3.14 Requirements for keeping of pigsa) Wall of the premises used for keeping of pigs must be constructed of brick, s<strong>to</strong>ne, concrete or otherdurable material; have a minimum height of at least 1,5 metres, <strong>and</strong> have a smooth , imperviousinternal surface.b) The floor area must provide at least 3m² for each pig accommodated in the pigsty, with an overallminimum floor area of at least 6m².c) The roof over any portion of a pigsty must have a minimum height of at least 1,5 metres.d) Except in the case of a roofed structure having one of its long sides completely open, the lighting <strong>and</strong>ventilation openings must be situated opposite one another in the external walls, <strong>and</strong> provide aminimum of at least 0,15 m² for each pig;e) The floor must be at least 150 mm above the surrounding ground level, constructed of concrete orother durable <strong>and</strong> impervious material brought <strong>to</strong> a smooth finish, <strong>and</strong> graded for the runoff liquidsin<strong>to</strong> an open channel outside the pigsty.f) The open channel referred <strong>to</strong> in paragraph (e) must be constructed of concrete or other durable <strong>and</strong>impervious material be a minimum of at least 100 mm in diameter, <strong>and</strong> be drained.g) The pigsty must be strong enough <strong>to</strong> prevent the pigs breaking out,h) The pigsty may not be situated within at least 100m of the boundary of the premises of any dwelling,building or structure used for human habitation, any place where foodstuffs are s<strong>to</strong>red or prepared forhuman consumption; Or any water resource intended for domestic consumption;i) A roofed over concrete platform must be provided for the s<strong>to</strong>rage of all swill in containers <strong>and</strong> thepreparation of pig feed;j) The platform referred <strong>to</strong> in paragraph (i) must comply with the provisions of paragraph (e) <strong>and</strong> inaddition, must have a curbing of a minimum height of 100 mm on each edge.k) A water supply, adequate for drinking <strong>and</strong> cleaning purpose, must be provided in or adjacent <strong>to</strong> thepigsty.3.15 Hygiene st<strong>and</strong>ards for keepers of pigsa) All pigs must be kept within a pigsty.b) The premises <strong>and</strong> any equipment, apparatus, containers <strong>and</strong> receptacles concerned must bemaintained in a clean <strong>and</strong> sanitary condition <strong>and</strong> in good repair.c) Portable s<strong>to</strong>rage receptacles, of impervious material <strong>and</strong> with close fitting lids must be provided forthe s<strong>to</strong>rage manure.d) All manure s<strong>to</strong>rage receptacles must be kept on a platform that compiles with the provisions ofsection 15(j).e) All manure must be removed from the pigsty at least once every 24 hours <strong>and</strong> place it in the manures<strong>to</strong>rage receptaclesf) The contents of the manure s<strong>to</strong>rage receptacles must be removed from the premises at least onceevery second day <strong>and</strong> dispose of the manure in a manner that will not create a public healthnuisance.g) A rodent-proof s<strong>to</strong>reroom of adequate size must be provided in which all feed, other than swill, mustbe s<strong>to</strong>red.h) Rodent-proof receptacles with close fitting lids must be provided <strong>to</strong> s<strong>to</strong>re all loose feed.3.16 Requirements for keeping of pets on residential premisesA pet refers <strong>to</strong> a domestic animal, reptile, insect, bird or poultry kept in a household for companionship oramusement:a) The premises in which pets are kept must be maintained in a clean <strong>and</strong> sanitary condition at all times.b) All manure <strong>and</strong> food scraps must be cleaned daily <strong>and</strong> removed from the premises at daily.c) Measures must be taken <strong>to</strong> prevent the soil beneath or around any premises form becomingsaturated with urine or polluted by any other matter or liquid from the pets.k) Measures must be taken <strong>to</strong> ensure that no pet disturbs the comfort, convenience, peace <strong>and</strong> quiet ofthe public.DOH. <strong>Norms</strong> <strong>and</strong> st<strong>and</strong>ards for environmental health in South Africa Feb 2013 66
