d) Pets must be vaccinated against zoonotic diseases, such as rabies at necessary intervals.e) Measures must be taken <strong>to</strong> prevent the breeding of pests <strong>and</strong> flies as a result on keeping of the pet.f) Pets must always be kept on the premises <strong>and</strong> measures must be taken <strong>to</strong> ensure that the pet doesnot leave the owner’s premises, unless accompanied by the owner.g) The pet cage must be situated at least 3m from the boundary of the neighbour’s wall.3.17 Requirements for keeping of bees on premisesa) No person may keep bees on any premises unless he/she is the holder of a permit issued by therelevant authority, authorizing that activity.b) Every bee hive must be is situated a minimum of five metres from any boundary of any premises, <strong>and</strong>a minimum of at least 20 metres from any public place or building used for human habitation or fromany place used for the keeping of animals, poultry <strong>and</strong> birds.c) The bees must be kept in an approved bee hive at all times.d) The bee hive must be kept in an area inaccessible <strong>to</strong> children <strong>and</strong> animals.e) The bee hive must be kept in a shaded area at all times, <strong>and</strong> supplied with a source of drinking waterwithin five metres of the hive.f) Refuse or waste material must not be dumped or deposited within at least 5m of the bee hive.3.17 Requirements for keeping of <strong>and</strong> slaughtering animals for religious <strong>and</strong> ceremonial purposesa) Animals may not be slaughtered in any place other than in recognizes abat<strong>to</strong>ir.b) In the case of religious or traditional slaughtering, the local authority must be notified in writing,fourteen (14) days prior <strong>to</strong> the event.c) The slaughtering of the animal must be conducted in a position as <strong>to</strong> not <strong>to</strong> allow observation by anyperson on neighbouring premises or any member of the public.d) The meat from the slaughtered animal must only be used purpose of the religious or ceremonial feast<strong>and</strong> shall not be for sale <strong>to</strong> any person.e) The meat must be h<strong>and</strong>led in a hygienic manner at all times.f) Blood <strong>and</strong> other waste products from the carcass must be disposed off in a manner which will notbecome a public health hazard or public health nuisance.g) The animal <strong>to</strong> be slaughtered shall not be kept on the premises for a period in excess of 12 hours,prior <strong>to</strong> slaughtering.h) Measures must be taken <strong>to</strong> ensure that no health nuisance exist from the premises as a result of theslaughtering.i) The services of an EHP may be requested for conducting a post-mortem examination of theslaughtered animal at a cost determined by Council.3.18 Requirements for pet shops <strong>and</strong> pet parloursa) The walls of the premises of a pet shop or pet parlour must be constructed of brick, concrete or otherimpervious material, have a smooth <strong>and</strong> easily cleanable internal surface, <strong>and</strong> be painted with awashable paint or other adequate finish.b) All floors surface must be constructed of concrete or other impervious material brought <strong>to</strong> a smoothfinish.c) All ceilings must be dust proof <strong>and</strong> easily cleanable.d) At least one wash h<strong>and</strong> basin, with a supply of running hot <strong>and</strong> cold potable water must be providedfor employees <strong>and</strong> the ratio of wash h<strong>and</strong> basins <strong>to</strong> persons employed on the premises must not beless than 1:15e) The wash h<strong>and</strong> basins, referred <strong>to</strong> in subparagraph (d), must be drained.f) Adequate s<strong>to</strong>rage facilities must be provided.g) Facilities for the washing of cages, trays <strong>and</strong> other equipment must be provided in the form of ether acurbed <strong>and</strong> roofed over platform with a minimum surface area 1, 5m², raised at least 100 mm abovethe floor <strong>and</strong> constructed of concrete or other impervious material brought <strong>to</strong> a smooth finish, whichplatform must be provided with a supply of running potable water; or a stainless steel sink or trough ofadequate size with a drainage board <strong>and</strong> provided with a supply of running potable water.h) The platform, sink or trough referred <strong>to</strong> in paragraph (g) must be drained.i) Any wall surface within 0,5 metres of the platform, sink or trough referred <strong>to</strong> in paragraph (g), must bepermanently covered with waterproof material <strong>to</strong> minimum height of 1,4 metres above the floor;DOH. <strong>Norms</strong> <strong>and</strong> st<strong>and</strong>ards for environmental health in South Africa Feb 2013 67
