) All facilities within a point of entry must be kept free of all vec<strong>to</strong>rs.STANDARDS FOR AIRCRAFTSSECTION 2: AIRCRAFTSAll aircrafts must generally comply with the International <strong>Health</strong> Regulations, 2005 <strong>and</strong> relevantguidelines. Airline opera<strong>to</strong>rs must ensure that they inform passengers on health measures recommendedby the WHO <strong>and</strong> adopted by South Africa. In addition, aircraft opera<strong>to</strong>rs must keep their conveyancesfree from sources of infection <strong>and</strong> or contamination including vec<strong>to</strong>rs. The aircraft must in particularcomply with the following requirements:1. Structural facilitiesa) Aircrafts must be designed in a manner that meets international st<strong>and</strong>ards <strong>and</strong> recommendationsb) Aircrafts must be designed <strong>and</strong> constructed in a manner that facilitates proper cleaning <strong>and</strong>disinfectionc) Aircraft interiors must be designed <strong>and</strong> constructed of suitable material <strong>to</strong> facilitate cleaning <strong>and</strong> <strong>to</strong>reduce the risk of harboring insects, rodents <strong>and</strong> other vec<strong>to</strong>rs.2. Air quality <strong>and</strong> waste managementThe management of waste on board aircraft must adhere <strong>to</strong> the requirements as specified in the WHOGuide <strong>to</strong> Hygiene <strong>and</strong> Sanitation in Aviation.a) Records of all moni<strong>to</strong>ring/sampling results of emission levels <strong>and</strong> waste management auditsconducted must be kept;b) Sufficient waste containers must be provided on board aircraft for s<strong>to</strong>rage of all types of waste.c) Waste containers must be promptly emptied from the aircraft on arrival <strong>and</strong> waste managementprocedures must be implemented as per <strong>National</strong> <strong>Environmental</strong> Management, Waste Act 59 of 20083. Noise Controla) Information with regard <strong>to</strong> the measurement of noise levels must be recorded.4. Disease surveillancea) Procedures for responding <strong>to</strong> a suspected communicable disease on board must be available;b) Crew members must be trained on communicable disease management on board aircrafts AnIntegrated Disease Surveillance Program should be developed per Points of Entries <strong>and</strong> implementedfor any event of International concern;5. Toilet <strong>and</strong> ablution facilitiesa) Adequate sanitation <strong>and</strong> h<strong>and</strong> washing facilities must be provided onboard the aircraft;b) Hot <strong>and</strong> cold running water must be provided at every h<strong>and</strong> wash basin;c) Toilet facilities must be kept clean at all times, <strong>and</strong> provided with an adequate supply of <strong>to</strong>ilet paper,soap <strong>and</strong> drying <strong>to</strong>wels;d) Toilet facilities must be maintained in good working order <strong>and</strong> in good repair at all times;e) Floors of the <strong>to</strong>ilet must be constructed of an easily cleanable surface;f) Sanitary waste on board aircraft must on arrival be discharged in<strong>to</strong> a Municipal approved seweragesystem.4. Food safety <strong>and</strong> hygieneFood safety <strong>and</strong> hygiene onboard an aircraft must conform <strong>to</strong> the specifications as per WHO Guide <strong>to</strong>Hygiene <strong>and</strong> Sanitation in Aviation.DOH. <strong>Norms</strong> <strong>and</strong> st<strong>and</strong>ards for environmental health in South Africa Feb 2013 82
