2. ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH MONITORING STANDARDS2.1 Inspections must be conducted at least once in a year.2.2 Checklists should be designed <strong>and</strong> utilized for inspection purposes.2.3 Inspections should include the assessment dirty <strong>and</strong> unsatisfac<strong>to</strong>ry health conditions.2.4 An inspection report, including the relevant health recommendations must be issued <strong>to</strong> the person incharge of the beauty salon after every inspection is conducted.2.5 A database of all beauty salons must be maintained for moni<strong>to</strong>ring <strong>and</strong> control purposes.3. STANDARDS FOR BEAUTY SALONSBeauty salons must comply with the following requirements:3.1 Structural facilitiesa) Walls must be constructed of an easily cleanable material <strong>and</strong> painted with a light coloured oil paint.b) Floors must be constructed of an easily cleanable material brought <strong>to</strong> a smooth finish <strong>and</strong> the ceilingmust be of a material that is dustproof.c) Toilet <strong>and</strong> ablution facilities must be provided for the clients <strong>and</strong> for employees on the premises. One<strong>to</strong>ilet must be provided for every 12 employees 1:12 <strong>and</strong> one <strong>to</strong>ilet must be provided for every twentyclients on the premises 1:20. The <strong>to</strong>ilet facilities must be designated by sex.d) Adequate wash up facilities with a constant supply of hot <strong>and</strong> cold running potable water must beprovided for washing of hair <strong>and</strong> h<strong>and</strong>s.e) An approved system for the disposal of waste water must be provided.f) All working surfaces, including shelves, fixtures <strong>and</strong> table <strong>to</strong>ps must be constructed of a durable, nonabsorbent<strong>and</strong> easily cleanable material.g) Adequate s<strong>to</strong>rage facilities must be provided for the s<strong>to</strong>rage of articles in connection with the servicesprovided.h) Where five or more persons of the same sex are employed on the premises, adequate separatechange rooms must be provided for the s<strong>to</strong>rage of personal belongings.i) The change rooms provided must contain an individual locker for every employee <strong>and</strong> a h<strong>and</strong> washbasin provided with a supply of hot <strong>and</strong> cold running potable water <strong>and</strong> an adequate supply of soap<strong>and</strong> disposable <strong>to</strong>wel.j) All refuse must be disposed off in an environmentally acceptable manner. Approved methods ofwaste s<strong>to</strong>rage <strong>and</strong> disposal must be adopted <strong>to</strong> prevent offensive odours <strong>and</strong> wind-blown litter.k) A central refuse s<strong>to</strong>rage area must be provided on the premises for the s<strong>to</strong>rage of waste pendingremoval for disposal.l) Adequate number of refuse bags <strong>and</strong> or bins must be provided for the collection of waste thepremises. The refuse bags must therefore be transferred <strong>to</strong> the central s<strong>to</strong>rage area.m) The salon premises may not be used for the purpose of food preparation or for sleeping.n) The premises <strong>and</strong> equipment must be maintained in good conditions <strong>and</strong> clean <strong>and</strong> sanitary at alltimes.o) Employees on the premises must be equipped with adequate protective clothing.p) Animals may not be permitted on the premises, unless in the case of a guide dog.q) Instruments used in the salon must be disinfected after each use.r) All instruments that come in<strong>to</strong> contact with blood must be sterilized after each use.s) Plastic, cloth <strong>to</strong>wels, aprons <strong>and</strong> caps must be washed daily after each use.t) Disposable gloves <strong>and</strong> wipes must be disposed off after each use.u) All sharp instruments, bloodied instruments <strong>and</strong> waste water in an approved manner.v) Razors, blades, needles <strong>and</strong> other sharp instruments must be s<strong>to</strong>red separately in a sharp instrumentbox.w) An approved first aid kit must be available on the premises at all times for the treatment of minorinjuries.
