n) A rodent-proof s<strong>to</strong>reroom must be provided for the s<strong>to</strong>rage of food.3.11 Hygiene st<strong>and</strong>ards for kennels <strong>and</strong> catteriesa) The premises, equipment <strong>and</strong> every vessel, receptacle or container <strong>and</strong> sleeping board used inconnection with the kennels or cattery must be maintained in a clean, sanitary condition <strong>and</strong> in goodrepair.b) Portable s<strong>to</strong>rage receptacles, of an impervious material with close fitting lids must be provided for thes<strong>to</strong>rage of dog <strong>and</strong> cat faeces;c) All faeces <strong>and</strong> other waste matter must be removed from the enclosure <strong>and</strong> shelter at least onceevery 24 hours <strong>and</strong> place it in the receptacles referred <strong>to</strong> in paragraph (b).d) The contents of the s<strong>to</strong>rage receptacles must be removed from the premises at least twice everyseven days <strong>and</strong> dispose of it in a manner that will not create a public health nuisance.e) All loose food must be s<strong>to</strong>red in receptacles, with close fitting lids, in the food s<strong>to</strong>re.f) Adequate refrigeration facilities must be provided <strong>to</strong> s<strong>to</strong>re perishable foods on the premises.g) Adequate separate refuse receptacles, with close fitting lids must be provided on the premises forrefuse other than faeces.h) A sick dog or cat must be kept isolated from any other animals.i) The premises must be maintained free from offensive odours <strong>and</strong> every enclosure, shelter, kennel,cage or food s<strong>to</strong>re clean <strong>and</strong> free from pests.j) Measures must be taken <strong>to</strong> ensure that no dog or cat disturbs the comfort, convenience, peace <strong>and</strong>quiet of the public.3.12 Requirements for keeping of wild animalsa) No wild animals may be kept on any residential or agricultural premises, without prior approval of therelevant nature conservation authorities as well as a permit by the relevant local authority authorizingthe keeping of such animals on the premises.`b) Wild animals must be kept in an enclosure <strong>and</strong>/or housing constructed <strong>and</strong> equipped as follows:• the enclosure <strong>and</strong>/or housing must satisfy the needs of the specific animal as specified by therelevant nature conservation authorities.• the enclosure <strong>and</strong>/or housing may not be situated within 50 metres of any boundary of the premises;any dwelling, building or structure used for human habitation; any dwelling, building or structurewhere food is s<strong>to</strong>red, h<strong>and</strong>led or prepared for human consumption; or any water resource intendedfor domestic consumption;c) An adequate supply of potable water for drinking <strong>and</strong> cleaning purposes must be provided on thepremises for both the animals <strong>and</strong> for persons on the premises.d) The enclosure <strong>and</strong>/or housing must be graded <strong>and</strong> drained in a way that does not pollute any waterresource or create a public health nuisance,e) A separate room, equipped with a preparation table <strong>and</strong> wash up sink, supplied with running potablewater <strong>and</strong> drained must be provided for the preparation of food for the animals;f) Adequate facilities must be provided for washing any cages, trays, crate, refuse receptacles <strong>and</strong> foodcontainers in the form of either –• a curbed platform constructed of concrete or other impervious material brought <strong>to</strong> a smooth finish; or• a stainless steel sink or trough adequate in size <strong>to</strong> accommodate the equipment <strong>to</strong> be washed;g) Both facilities referred <strong>to</strong> in paragraph (c) must be provided with a supply of running water adequatefor drinking <strong>and</strong> cleaning <strong>and</strong> be drained.h) Any area <strong>and</strong> room in which fodder <strong>and</strong> food are s<strong>to</strong>red must be rodent-proof; <strong>and</strong> the enclosure<strong>and</strong>/or housing must be adequate in size <strong>to</strong> allow free unobstructed movement of animals kepttherein.3.13 Hygiene st<strong>and</strong>ards for keepers of wild animalsa) The premises must be maintained in a clean <strong>and</strong> sanitary condition at all timesb) All manure <strong>and</strong> food scraps from any enclosure <strong>and</strong>/or housing must be cleaned at adequateintervals.c) Measures must be taken <strong>to</strong> prevent the soil beneath or around any enclosure <strong>and</strong>/or housing frombecoming saturated with urine or polluted by any other matter or liquidDOH. <strong>Norms</strong> <strong>and</strong> st<strong>and</strong>ards for environmental health in South Africa Feb 2013 65
