at least 0,5 m² for each grown goose, turkey or peacock; <strong>and</strong> at least 0,14 m² for each grownpigeon; <strong>and</strong> the minimum aggregate floor area must be at least 4m²;d) A poultry run, if provided, must be enclosed with wire mesh or other durable material.e) Every wall of a building or structure housing a battery system must be at least 2,4m high <strong>and</strong> must beconstructed of concrete, s<strong>to</strong>ne, brick or other impervious material <strong>and</strong> must have a smooth internalsurface.f) If walls are provided, the building must be ventilated <strong>and</strong> lighted by means of mechanical ventilation<strong>and</strong> artificial lighting or by obtaining natural ventilation <strong>and</strong> light through openings or opening windowsof an area not less than 15% of the floor area of the building or structure.g) The floor of the building or structure housing a battery system must be constructed of concrete orother impervious material brought <strong>to</strong> a smooth finish <strong>and</strong> if required by an <strong>Environmental</strong> <strong>Health</strong>Practitioner, the floor surface must be graded <strong>and</strong> drained by means of a channel drained.h) If no walls are provided, or the walls are made of metal, the floor must be provided with a curb at least150 mm high around its edges.i) The cages of the battery system must be made of an impervious material, <strong>and</strong> if required by anenvironmental health practitioner, a tray of an impervious material must be fitted under every cage forthe collection of manure;j) A water supply adequate for drinking <strong>and</strong> cleaning must be provided in or next <strong>to</strong> every poultry house<strong>and</strong> poultry run <strong>and</strong> in or next <strong>to</strong> a building or structure housing a battery system.k) A poultry run or building or structure housing a battery system must be constructed within 3 metres ofany dwelling or other building or structure used for human habitation, any place where foodstuffs ares<strong>to</strong>red or prepared for human consumption, or the nearest boundary of any l<strong>and</strong>.l) Feed must be s<strong>to</strong>red in an adequate rodent-proof s<strong>to</strong>reroom.m) Adequate washing facilities must be provided for the cleaning of the cages;n) If required by an EHP, due <strong>to</strong> the amount of manure s<strong>to</strong>red on the premises awaiting removal, amanure s<strong>to</strong>rage area complying with the following requirements must be provided:• a roofed platform constructed of concrete or other impervious material;• the platform’s outside edges must have a minimum curb of 100 mm high;• the platform must be graded <strong>and</strong> drained in terms of section 121• the roof of the platform must extend a minimum of 1 metre beyond the edges of the base of theplatform.3.6 Hygiene st<strong>and</strong>ards for keeping of poultry on premisesa) All poultry must be kept within a poultry run or building or structure housing a battery system.b) The premises <strong>and</strong> any equipment, apparatus, container or receptacle used in connection withkeeping of poultry must be maintained in a clean, sanitary condition <strong>and</strong> in good repair.c) The premises <strong>and</strong> every poultry house, poultry run or building or structure housing a battery systemmust be maintained in a clean condition <strong>and</strong> all cages must be free from pests.d) Measures must be taken <strong>to</strong> ensure that the poultry do not disturb or hinder the comfort, convenience,peace or quiet of the public.e) Portable manure s<strong>to</strong>rage receptacles of an impervious material <strong>and</strong> with close fitting lids must beprovided <strong>and</strong> the manure s<strong>to</strong>rage receptacles must be kept on a platform.f) All manure <strong>and</strong> other waste from a poultry house <strong>and</strong> poultry run must be removed at least onceevery 48 hours <strong>and</strong> once every four days form a building or structure housing a battery system.g) Manure <strong>and</strong> other waste matter must be kept in manure s<strong>to</strong>rage receptacles.h) The contents of the manure s<strong>to</strong>rage receptacles must be removed from the premises at least onceevery seven days <strong>and</strong> disposed of in a way which will not create a public health nuisance.i) Adequate measure must be taken <strong>to</strong> keep the premises free of flies, cockroaches <strong>and</strong> rodents <strong>and</strong> <strong>to</strong>prevent offensive odours arising from the keeping of poultry on the premises.3.7 Requirements for keeping of rabbitsDOH. <strong>Norms</strong> <strong>and</strong> st<strong>and</strong>ards for environmental health in South Africa Feb 2013 62
a) On any residential premises, only 5 (five) or less adult rabbits may be kept on the premises in aproclaimed <strong>to</strong>wnship.b) On premises zoned for agricultural purposes, not more than 20 (twenty) adult rabbit may be kept onthe premises.
