There are over27,000 BTS sites across the groupwhich consume approximately324,000 Mwh of energy units everyyear. The energy is mainly used foroperating BTSs, air conditioners andthe battery charging system. In siteswhere grid power is available for lessthan 24 hours, diesel generators (DG)and valve-regulated lead-acid (VRLA)batteries are used. The running ofdiesel generators is not only 13 timesmore expensive but also causescarbon dioxide (CO 2) emissions whichi s h i g h l y d e t r i m e n t a l t o t h eenvironment.Annual Report 2009 • 149
