The Group has launched a cross OpCo programme tomanage energy efficiency in its networks. One of theobjectives of the programme is to conduct trials infinding optimal alternative energy solutions and to deploythem across the Opcos.Among the initiatives taken include:Axiata has been focusing on passive elements in itsenergy saving initiatives. In the future, Axiata will focuson active elements of energy efficiency such asintroducing mandatory active functions/features that cancontribute to power savings based on site traffic, e.g.transceivers that will go on shutdown mode automaticallywhen traffic in the area is low.• Deployment of Green Hybrid sites utilising solar, windand biodiesel• Phasing out of old generation BTSs which consume alot of power and trialing excess capacity shutdownfunctions• Reducing diesel consumption through reduction innumber of DGs; use of fuel efficient DGs and batteriesas prime back upPASSIVEWind •Bio Diesel •Fuel Cells •RenewableEnergy Resources• Green Shelter• Outdoor BTS• Higher OperatingTemperature• Battery Usage• Infra SharingInfra• Use of power efficient air conditioners and reducingrunning time, and eventually migration towardsutilisation of outdoor BTSs which do not need airconditioning• Use of new generation deep discharge batteriesbased on new technology which are able to operateat higher temperaturesACTIVEExcess CapacityShut OffTRX Shut down •Transmit Power •Expansion •Cabinet Shut offTelecomEquipment• MCPA• RAN Sharing• Swap Old BTSAxiata has to date deployed 23 green sites and adoptedthe energy efficient programme, saving 215 MWh units ofenergy translating to USD22 million in energy cost andmore importantly 142 tonnes reduction in CO 2emissions.The Group’s Power Saving initiatives were shortlisted forthe Green Network Award organised by GSMA.Moving forward, the group will continue to explore newgreen energy deployment. The target is to deploy 200green mobile sites by 2012 and reduce CO 2emissions byup to 30% by 2015.Axiata Group Berhad • 150
