Corporate ResponsibilityDialog Technology ScholarshipsThe Dialog scholarship programmeoffers scholarships for best performersin technology streams for tertiaryand secondary education. Aimed atbuilding the knowledge capital forthe ICT industry and developing theintellectual capital of Sri Lanka’sfuture leaders, the programme alsocreates greater awareness abouto p p o r t u n i t i e s i n t h etelecommunication industry amongthe youth of Sri Lanka. Going beyondfunding, Dialog supports interactionbetween the scholars and itsemployees, which facilitatesmentoring, internships and soft skillsdevelopment to prepare thesescholars for a position of communityleadership and service. To date morethan 750 advanced level anduniversity scholarships have beengiven out.Dialog has also been awarded theprestigious GSMA Grant of the MobileMoney for the Unbanked Programme.T h e g r a n t i s t o r e d u c e t h einfrastructure gap that exists in ruralareas by making mCommerce moreaccessible, convenient and affordableto rural customers. Dialog will focuson regions deficient in financialservices infrastructure, and oninitiatives to enhance people’s livesby providing a range of mCommerceservices at affordable price includingutility bill payment, person-to-personmoney transfers, over-the-counterpayments and cash withdrawal/deposits.MALAYSIACelcom continues with its partnershipwith MERCY Malaysia towardsproviding communication facilities inhumanitarian relief efforts. Celcomtogether with MERCY launched aninitiative in 2009 in aid of victims ofthe Israeli attacks on the Gaza strip.Celcom customers were able to dotheir part and contribute bydownloading MERCY Malaysiawallpapers at RM3 each. All proceedswere forwarded to MERCY Malaysia.Celcom also provides the organisationwith hardware devices such asBlackBerry smartphones, mobilephones, satellite phones and USB/3G datacards, together with freeusage of modems for key personnel.Celcom also launched the “CelcomBroadband Cares” campaign, amonth long campaign in aid ofselected shelters and homes inSeptember 2009 which exceeded itsinitial projections. The success of thecampaign was in part attributable tothe active support of CelcomBroadband customers, whereby foreach successful Celcom BroadbandWeekly or Daily Unlimited subscription,RM1 was contributed towards thecampaign.INDONESIAXL’s initiatives in educationaldevelopment are done via theIndonesia Berprestasi (IndonesiaAccomplish) platform, focusing onpublic education and ICT education.Initiatives include: Komputer UntukSekolah (Computers for Our Schools)which was specifically designed asan integrated and sustainable fiveyearscheme, whereby XL providescomputers and internet connectionto 100 educational institutions andschools throughout Indonesia.
