106 Lessons on The Yoga of Patanjaliprescribed as Pranayama in some schools of Yoga. There maybe a greater truth in the process but it is not known by eitherPatanjali or the Author of the Bhagavadgita. It is a sufficient reason for us not to follow that method. We wanted to follow Patanjali’s Yoga in the beginning and let usnot skid away into the Ashrams of different Gurus. NeitherPatanjali nor Bhagavadgita prescribe us any Khumbaka inPranayama. Sometimes you can ask, why can’t we doKhumbaka? You may say that the retention of breath is alsonecessary for some purpose. That is what the school of HathaYoga says. It may be true, it may be necessary for some specificpurpose. At the same time your lungs say that it is necessary tobreathe. There is oxygen available and there is the urge of thelungs for oxygen. If you know more than the oxygen and yourlungs, it is O. K. If your specific purpose to do Khumbaka ismore valuable than your life, it is well and good. If you want to decide, it is another way,the way of Hatha Yoga. Here Patanjali and Bhagavadgita deviatefrom the other schools of thought. Hence we too prefer to deviate. We stick on to Patanjali since we started to study Patanjali’sbook and follow it. The path of Patanjali, the Bhagavadgita andthe Masters is always one. You can choose the other way butbe sure you are not in the path of the Bhagavadgita, Patanjaliand the Masters. We feel it better to be under the care of certainscientists, who are practical and who assure us everything aboutthe results without a mystification. Is it better to have medicinefrom a doctor, who is well experienced, or is it better to chooseone’s own medicine? Commonsense tells us that it is always
