Those who followthe passive attitude may apply themselves loosely to theawareness. They stop half-the way and then take up after sometime. Those who apply themselves moderately, are those whofind the progress. The three modalities should be foundsimultaneously. Apply the attitude softly, moderately and intensely.Soft application is not loose application. Moderate applicationis not passive application. Intense application is not the emotionalapplication. The more ardent you are unnecessarily, the moreis the probability of being lost and you will drop off. By knowingthe three modalities, you will have the touch, the experienceand the sensation of the Lord of your consciousness, who is inyou.You have already understood the difference between theLord and the pseudo-Lord. The Pseudo-Lord is the negativepole, who receives the impressions though the senses. The realLord is the one who shines forth as the faculties of the sensesand the mind. He is the positive transmitting centre ofconsciousness that exists in the false yourself and he is the realyourself. He begins to shine and your mind, body and the senseswill receive the continuous touch of His presence. “Thy will,not mine” says Jesus Christ, who wants you to know of thisLord. The Faculties of the senses and the mind are not yoursbut they belong to Him. He also says “I come down from myFather in Heaven”. That means the ninth nature comes downwith the tenth, who is the Lord. The five senses and the activityof the mind come down from the positive pole of existence,the Father in Heaven. Again He says, “I am not going to bewith you long”. That means the Lord-consciousness sendsHis rays to facilitate our earth-existence but He exists returnedand seated with the tenth one. These three sentences make usunderstand this part of the Yoga teaching better. Some people
Lesson - 5 89did not understand the message. They thought that He wasspeaking of His crucifixion. But the sentences convey greatinitiations at the gate between man and God.Now let us recapitulate. We have to suspend the activityof the mind stuff (the mind and the senses). Then only you canknow your real existence. Start with proposing self-awareness.Know the measures of the senses and the mind. Know the fivemethods of the application of measure. Know also the rightapplication and the wrong application. Wrong applicationcomplicates the not-self while the right application simplifies itto place you in the real self and get your not-self absorbed in it.The Lord-consciousness is different from your consciousnesswith the mind and the senses. The activity of the mind and thesenses can be complicated by a wrong application of themeasures. The Lord-consciousness is always free fromcomplications. “He is not touched by the many complicationsmade with the mind and the senses” says Patanjali, defining Isaor Ishwara, the Lord. Every day the mind and the senses getthemselves involved by the wrong application of the measurestowards the environment. Still, the Ishwara shines and sendsHis rays as the mind and the senses. He is not at all touched bythe complications of the not-self just as the source of illuminationhas nothing to do with your shadows in the room. He waits untilthe mind (the false yourself) solves the complications for itself,and he waits even when the process of solving is postponedfoolishly. He waits until you make a total surrender in His light.When once this is done the complications disappear. Thisdoes not mean that you can go on creating complications everyday to make a total surrender before Him in the evening or onthe Sunday. Do not think that there is a servant, God, who waitsto wash your sinful robes every day or every week. Do notmake an ugly picture of a washerman of your God.
