34 Lessons on The Yoga of Patanjalisleep is and how you sleep. Even during sleep you can seeyourself sleeping just as you see another person in the roomsleeping. This is only after you are a Yogi. For the present youdo not know. You will know it when you are a Master of theapparatus in your constitution. Impression works as the fifthmeasure but people use it wrongly until they have the mastery. For many on this earth the impressions are not voluntary butare created by an involuntary exposure of the mind and thesenses to the environment. Thus we have wrong impressionsabout people and places, about parties and religions, and aboutnations and races. But the pity is we are galvanised into theaction of the daily routine by these wrong impressions. Theresult is discomfort and complication. A lady’s thought isgalvansied by the memory of her lover in Geneva or Paris andshe goes into depression. A wife feels apprehensive of herhusband who is in London and she goes into fear. When thesetwo ladies are given good dishes they cannot eat because theirmemories caused depression or fear. The fact is that eating has nothing to do with the husbandstaying at Paris or Geneva. She is staying at a distance but sheis conditioned by memory. Yet she calls it love! What a pity!Love has nothing to do with all this meaningless activity. This isall a big confusion due to the wrong application of the fifthactivity. As we begin to practise Yoga and progress along thesteps of discipline, we get familiarised with all these five typesof activity. Gradually we come to know the workings of themachine and the parts. This leads to a mastery over the totalmachine that is gifted to you by nature. Then you will be askilled technician who can use the machine properly. The resultis the comfort which the Yogis call bliss (Ananda). Bliss is nota goal but it is the state in which you are expected to be whilethe machine is working for you. Comfort or bliss is neither
