PERMEABILITY<br />
The preservative treatment of wood, especially<br />
that, used in the ground or in damp or exposed<br />
locations, often lengthens the life of the wood<br />
as much as five times. However, the treatment<br />
value depends primarily on the kind of preservatives<br />
used, the depth to which it penetrates into<br />
the wood, and the amount’ of the preservative<br />
retained in the wood after treatment.<br />
2 Resistance dependent on resin content in wood.<br />
Thus, the resistance of a wood to impregnation<br />
by preservatives is of primary importance. Unfortunately,<br />
this property cannot be determined<br />
from the superficial appearance of the timber, but<br />
must be gotten by carefully controlled tests in the<br />
laboratory.<br />
Little, is known concerning the resistance of<br />
the different Caribbean timbers to the penetration<br />
of preservatives. Available information on this<br />
