Uranium<br />

<strong>Australia</strong> has the world’s largest EDR of uranium with an estimated<br />

592,765 petajoules (1,151 kt) at the end of 2014. This represents around<br />

one-third of global resources. At current rates of production, <strong>Australia</strong>’s<br />

uranium resources are sufficient for a further 231 years of production.<br />

The majority of <strong>Australia</strong>’s uranium resources are located <strong>in</strong> South<br />

<strong>Australia</strong>, the Northern Territory and Western <strong>Australia</strong>. The Olympic Dam<br />

deposit <strong>in</strong> South <strong>Australia</strong> is the world’s largest uranium deposit. <strong>Australia</strong><br />

has significant potential for the discovery of new uranium resources,<br />

<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g through the Woomera Protected Area <strong>in</strong> South <strong>Australia</strong>.<br />

Exploration<br />

Exploration expenditure on energy resources <strong>in</strong> <strong>Australia</strong> was $4.1 billion<br />

<strong>in</strong> 2014–15, about $1 billion less than 2013–14. Oil and gas accounted for<br />

92 per cent of total expenditure at around $3.8 billion.<br />
