W<strong>in</strong>d energy<br />

After solar energy, w<strong>in</strong>d energy has been the second fastest grow<strong>in</strong>g<br />

renewable energy source <strong>in</strong> <strong>Australia</strong> over the past ten years, averag<strong>in</strong>g<br />

31 per cent a year. W<strong>in</strong>d is currently the second biggest contributor to<br />

renewable electricity generation <strong>in</strong> <strong>Australia</strong>, after hydroelectricity,<br />

generat<strong>in</strong>g 10.3 terawatt hours <strong>in</strong> 2013–14, 4 per cent of <strong>Australia</strong>’s total<br />

electricity generation. Use of w<strong>in</strong>d began <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g rapidly from the mid-<br />

2000s due to lower<strong>in</strong>g costs of the technology, and government policies to<br />

support renewable electricity generation.<br />
