Electricity consumption<br />

Electricity consumption <strong>in</strong> <strong>Australia</strong> has been decl<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g s<strong>in</strong>ce 2010–11.<br />

This is largely due to energy efficiency improvements <strong>in</strong> many sectors,<br />

consumer responses to higher retail electricity prices, and decl<strong>in</strong>es <strong>in</strong> the<br />

petroleum ref<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g, non-ferrous metals, and food, beverage and tobacco<br />

manufactur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>dustries. Electricity consumption fell by 4 per cent <strong>in</strong> the<br />

residential sector <strong>in</strong> 2013–14 and by 3 per cent <strong>in</strong> the manufactur<strong>in</strong>g sector<br />

which, together with the commercial and services sector which rema<strong>in</strong>ed<br />

fairly flat, are the largest users of electricity.<br />
