137 Fragment from a Tunic Avian Staff-Bearer Regional Tiwanaku style AD 400-800 Camelid wool; interlocking tapestry 14" x 11" This refined weaving, which interprets the eagle or condor incarnation of the staff-bearer in an exquisite range of colors and details, appears to have no equivalent in textile art or painted ceramics (according to the published literature). The rich color combination—especially the masterful manipulation of various shades of indigo blue—is, however, characteristic of the Tiwanaku aesthetic. The luminous palette may reflect a peripheral tradition (from northern Chile?) and the superb quality speaks to the elite context in which the garment was produced and worn. This unconventional image does not conform either to the Pukara style exemplified by previous entries, or to later Wari geometricization. The style of visualization is less formalized and more naturalistic—even painterly—enjoying remarkable freedom from the rigid application of aesthetic canons evident in those other traditions. The design nevertheless has a modular structure, so that the figure and his regalia are composed from stacked blocks either of solid color or of beautiful geometric configurations featuring soft triangles, squares and circles. An unusual headdress, consisting of feathers or metal tabs(?) that diminish in size as it wraps over the head, is studded with a distinctive motif that evokes the white cup-shaped flower and fruit of the San Pedro cactus. Other details of the composition are in deteriorated condition. But several stand out as either unique or tantalizing, including the green-and-red diamond-cross panel (a cloth or bag?) set on top of the staff; the flared, dentated shape of the tunic; and the ornamental discs dangling from the waistband. 22
