The magic lies in simplicity. Dariusz Klimczak was born in 1967 in Sieradz, Poland. He is a painter, journalist, poet, musician, and a photographer. He has taken part in both collective and individual exhibitions in his home country of Poland, as well as abroad. For the past 10 years he’s been working with surrealist photomontages based on his photos. Whilst he prefers contrasting black and white square frames, he doesn’t shun traditional colourful pieces. In his phototricks, he looks for the atmosphere, anecdotes and universal symbols, which can deeply move his audience, making them reflect and smile. 56 POST SCRIPTUM
I don’t believe in afflation but in regular work. A journalist, a painter, an ex-rock-percussionist, and a composer. How did it happen that you became a photographer? I have been taking photos for more than 30 years. I have started with my old analogue camera “Zenit” and only one lens. I attended an art school, where we had a chance to experiment in the dark room with multiple layers of movie frames, and even with photomontages. However, they were lacking the precision which can now be achieved with computer programmes. When I discovered the possibilities of photoshop, I quickly switched to digital photography and editing. It started as a game by adding a dog-head onto my friend. It looked so realistic. I decided to take this path and create my little worlds based on bits and pieces from my regular photographs. From the very beginning, I wanted to create a realistic illusion. In the time of the Internet, computers, and easy access to free stock , almost everyone could create photomontages using Photoshop or other editing programs. You made it into a lifestyle. Where does this success come from? I think for me it was all about being systematic and consistent and to earn a living from it. I rarely needed to do commissions such as weddings and first communions. Several years ago, I decided to create one piece a day – no matter what. I don’t believe in sudden inspiration, only consistent work counts. With time and experience in using Photoshop, I started creating several pieces a day. In my opinion, if it is my work (,) all elements should be photographed by me, that’s why I never use stock photos. Open space, freedom, harmony, purity, clear picture, magic, contrast in tone and composition – these are the main characteristics of your works. What would you call your style? I would say it is neo-surrealist. I base my works on classics, which you can see in the composition of my photographs. I don’t like chaos or overcrowding in my works, I don’t like too many elements. I try to reach harmony for my stories to be clear and understandable. The magic lies in simplicity. Although I take inspiration from surrealism, understanding the artistic achievement of its creators, but I don’t copy anyone. Could you describe how you create your works? I am interested in the process. Usually, I start with the landscape. I look for something special, a base, whether it’s the rhythm, an interesting texture or something unique. Then I add the clouds, I have an abundant collection of them. I want them to complement, POST SCRIPTUM 57
